Hi all,

I'm back for advice. Previously I was asking about wheels which I ended up buying only for my bikes to be stolen so are now being returned. Now I'm after some ideas on a replacement bike. Everything is currently going through the insurance and was told that they'll pay out what I insured the 2 bikes for which totals £1700 but not the additional items I bought for the bike such as my fizik saddle, time pedals and 3T stem which is slightly annoying as they say that all accessories must be included in the price.

Anyway forgetting all that, with the money from my wheels included I'll be looking at £2k for my replacement as I no longer need 2 bikes so thought I'm best of just getting one good one. I'm coming from a Specialized Secteur Comp which had a full 105 groupset and was pretty relaxed in it's geometry. I had a full retul fitting on this which ended with a more aggressive setup which worked so think I'd like something a little less laid-back this time round but not obviously spine breaking, just a good all rounder.

From looking around briefly I've seen so many different set ups I'm confused. Within this budget I've seen full ultegra groupsets, mix and match ultegra/105, campagnolo Athena, Chorus and SRAM Force so no idea what the best direction to go is. The bikes I'm liking the look of so far are:

Canyon Ultimate AL 9.0/ES/SL/Di2 all within budget thanks to the offer on the Di2 version
Canyon Ultimate CF 9.0
Focus Cayo Evo 4.0
Wilier Izoard XP Ultegra
Giant Defy Composite 1

And the list goes on for what sound like great bikes with great spec. As you can see I have no idea about which is good and what isn't. I have a Giant and Cube lbs, a Focus lbs and one that specialises in Specialized and Scott. I'd prefer something local but if I'm going to get better spec for my money going online then I will. This is just to prepare for when the insurance is sorted which will hopefully happen in the next week or so.

Check out the bike builder on the Ribble site. You can spec a carbon frame with Ultegra (groupset and wheels) for £1,588.

I've had a play with the Ribble and also the Rose bike builder and you can definitely spec up some great kit, but I really get lost in it all. Are their frames good in comparison to the likes of Ridley, Focus, Giant and so on?

Thanks vickster I've definitely looked at that before, maybe you posted it in a different thread but someone did but that was back when I was wishing to spend £2k so now I should be able to I can finally not just admire it as I do like the Ridley's alot! Has anyone got one or ridden them? I need to do some searching for other lbs's that stock some of these bikes as looks like I may be having to do a road trip soon as prefer to get a feel.

It looks good in the plastic, both in the shop and on the road - seen a green one being ridden, very eye catching!

I don't know how many they have left, I don't think they had any in the Sutton shop last weekend

Thanks vickster, think the green is a little out there for me but like the lotto black. I've just checked on the website and when I select small it enables all 3 colours and says ordered on request so will keep an eye on it.

I'm not really sold on the Specialized range this time round as both the roubaix and tarmac elite's only have 105 for £1800 so seems I'm getting a lot more bike for the cash with any of the other one's I've looked at and more so with the Canyon's and Ridley above. I'm sure the frames are great though. I'll probably take along the figures sheet I got after the retul fit to any lbs I go to and see how close I can get to feeling similar.

vickster that was my reaction when I saw they've discontinued the Secteur comp which was good value back when I bought it.

Cyclist the Defy's are on my radar and I have a local dealer who I can get fitted up with so that's cool.

Kestevan, that made me laugh....I'm sure the frames make up for the lower spec'd groupset I just like to see I'm getting a good deal for my money.

Anyway after multiple discussions with the insurers today they've apparently instructed Wheelies Direct to replace my bikes. I rang them back and said I'd like to use a local dealer and they've said I need to get a quote from Wheelies first as they get a discount which is the price that they'll pay out maximum. After looking briefly on their website I've not seen many full 105 bikes including brakes, chainset and cassette as mine had so they may have to move up the range which they've said they'll do if nothing matches my requirements. Once both bikes are costed I can request the cheque for Wheelies discounted price to be sent to a supplier of my choice which is where I'll get a single bike. Just got to wait for the call from Wheelies now but I'm going to stick by requesting like for like full groupset or at least brakes, shifters and dérailleurs as see a lot use FSA cranksets now. They can easily replace my Giant Rapid 4 as that model is still there so I'll just say I want that as my like for like. Wonder how much discount they offer Esure, hopefully it's not too much.

I had a similar situation but I had replaced the bike before the insurance claim got settled. Wheelies priced up my bike and accessories and I got a cheque in the post. Wheelies chap was very helpful

Dont get too hung up on the groupset - the frame is the important part.

A groupset can be upgraded bit by bit (and relatively cheaply) as parts wear out or when you see a bargain but choose a lesser frame (or even a good one that doesnt suit your needs quite as well) and you are stuck with it.

By the time you get to Dura Ace etc,it is cheaper to either buy the top end bike,or buy a frame & components seperately.Upgrading groupsets is a very expensive way to go.

I dont disagree that upgrading the groupset in a oner is an expensive way to do it but upgrading when you see a good price for a particular component and/or when you need to replace is an economical way to do it. You would still need to spend the money for the replacement even if you'd gone with the better groupset in the first place.

Its just to me having a better groupset on a lesser frame is a false economy compared to having a better frame with a lesser groupset. In any case it looks like being a choice between 105 and Ultegra or a mix of both - that is not like a choice between Dura Ace and 2300 where the difference is going to be significant.
