You got older!
When I hit 50 my cover cost went down from about £300 to £200.
You know you're considered old when insurance companies no longer care what you drive ...

In my more petrol-head days, I had a Porsche and was getting quotes for a more powerful one. "No change in premium," I was told. Then I found a really silly one, heavily modified and tuned. "Still the same premium, Sir."

Basically telling me I'm too old to do anything silly (probably true where driving is concerned) ...

Profits are negative at the moment (at the market level - there are some companies who are able to underwrite profitably and offer a decent service.)

From memory in 2011 the market lost 10% on premium*, and in 2012 it clawed its way back to losing only about 3%. Then in 2013 law reforms came in which began to take some of the frictional costs out of the system (mainly by forcing lawyers to be more efficient on simple claims) which industry experts reckon will save about 5% on the cost of premiums. The market responded... by cutting rates by 15%, so I'm expecting a 2013 loss back up to 10% or so, and the same for 2014. Rates are just about beginning to stabilise, so that's probably another 10% loss in 2015 and perhaps a smaller loss in 2016.

*i.e for every £100 of motor premium, insurers made a loss of £10.

Oh my heart bleeds for them ………… not.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Why do they do it then? Having just spent an hour or so looking into re-insuring my motor (quotes from £650 to £350, the most expensive being a renewal from my existing spiv,), I don't share your view of their substantial sacrifice.
As I said, some companies make money out of it. Some others make money out of selling add-ons (something which is getting increasingly difficult, for very good reasons). Some others simply suck it up because they believe they have to be seen to be selling motor insurance. Some others simply aren't very good.
It's not a free service. If you don't call them out for anything else it's a £300 service, which is extortionate. The whole programme plays on the fears and apathy of older people.
My Mother (86) has just been conned into buying a new boiler . She only told me after she had had it installed. It was perfectly OK and half the age of my boiler. When I asked why she had done it one of the reasons was "it would give a better flow". She doesn't even own a bath and the shower is electric.

typical lawyer response there.

if there are questions about electrical install I don't respond with " no you can't" I actually respond with what you can do. or advise on how to sort it out.

you crack on though !
no idea what you are on about. I made a point that you do not need insurance if you meet other criteria.

What has that got to do with answering questions about electrical installation or otherwise?

If you don't understand why not ask a question instead of beating about the bush. I am not aware of anyone asking any questions about my post and indeed at least one response showed they knew the circumstances

not beating about bush.

OK here goes.

why not answer posts with a response that gives information rather than alluding to you knowing the answer but not actually giving one . not just on this thread but in general. several of your posts have been one worders where several would have been better to provide info.

although if trained as a lawyer evasive answers seem to be the way you go.

you seem a little dim if you can't understand what i was trying to get across . not what i would expect from a razor sharp legal mind

or are you a barrack room lawyer ?

Erm I have not got a clue what you are going on about.
, I was not answering anyone.

I was making a simple point. I made the point I intended to make.

Quite where are these questions I am supposed to be avoiding?

How does one comply with certain other requirements?

What are the 'certain other requirements'?

Deposit a sum of money with government (think it is hm treasury) BEFORE you drive. Think sum is £0.5m or £0.25m, but you would need to look up details as its not a measure that is in common use and I can't recall the sum off the top of my head

S143 Road Traffic Act
(1) a person must not use a motor vehicle on a road [F1or other public place] unless there is in force in relation to the use of the vehicle by that person such a policy of insurance or such a security in respect of third party risks as complies with the requirements of this Part of this Act,

The 2nd part of S143(1) of the RTA is the proviso, its insurance OR.....
