Yesterday, as I cycled through the village of Walliswood on the way to work, I saw a motorist stranded at the side of the road. I stopped and asked if she needed any help upon which she replied that a branch had got lodged under her car and she couldn't get it out and was in the process of phoning the RAC. I had a look under the car and with a bit of wiggling managed to free the offending item for which she was very grateful. That made me feel good for the rest of the ride, thinking I might possibly have made a small positive contribution to motorist/cyclist relations  .

Today, again cycling through Walliswood I saw an ambulance ahead stopped on the opposite side of the road with its blue lights flashing. As I got closer there were a couple of people stopped on the opposite side of the road in front of the ambulance and on my side of the road a totally mangled car which looked like it had been in a high speed head on collision with something. Can't think what could have happened as the road there is straight with decent visibility. Hopefully the driver survived.

I wonder what is going to happen tomorrow. They say things happen in threes, or something like that.

I had a less happy experience the other day while cycling the traffic free Lodes Way in Cambs. As I cycled past a family of cyclists I saw that the young lad (about 6 or 7) had obviously fallen off and had a bleeding leg. The parents were struggling with an old tissue, so I offered them some of my antisceptic Wet Wipes and plasters what I always carry. The Dad just scowled at me and said ''he's fine' or some such but may as well have told me to pi$$ off! Must admit the incident did little to rid me of my suspicion that Cambridgeshire has to be Britain's most miserable county!

Harsh, you were only trying to help. I'd be dead chuffed if someone stopped to help like that.

May have been some sort of guilt-induced reaction, like he was afraid it looked like he hadn't kept a proper eye on his kid, and/or wanted to appear completely in control.

I'm still on leave, so no commuting. I had planned to get some big miles in in the road bike instead, but first baby, then woman, and now me have all gone down in turn with head colds. I'm ok TBH, but I've finally conceded it might be time to give my body a break so no gym or riding until I return to work on Wednesday.

I'm going up the wall with pent up lack-of-riding guilt already!

As non born Cambs type, but resident in the county I have to agree, but of late since the commuting started the cycle peeps do say hello, be they on a top notch road bike in club colours, or something that seems to have come out of the dyke.

Love the name RHW! Yep I'm probably being a little harsh, and making sweeping generalisations - there are some great folks in the village I live in, though it is v. near Suffolk! I was a little miffed as it's not the first time I've offered to help stranded cyclists in or near Cambridge and been scowled at. I've not come across that kind of thing anywhere else!

Maybe it's to do with Cambridge being the cycle capital of the county, or we're just friendly types in a non borderline stalker type way .
joking aside as a parent who has been in that exact same situation it's mainly embarresment/not prepared for that situation type thing.I like to think they got home and dad had a bit of 'self reflection'!

depends where you are in the county imho. there's a few 'older/middle aged' riders i see almost every time i'm our for a ride, i say hello every single time and not one of them has returned my greeting or even acknowledged me, miserable sods.

I do get the same, I generally wave to everyone I pass, get about 50% return, sometimes just a glare, the worst offenders are the guys on far-too-clean road bikes. I got over-taken by a group of 4 cyclists one evening, said hello to all of the and just got glares back, so I overtook them and tried saying hello again... ^_^
