In a couple of weeks we're having a long weekend in Bath and will be taking the bikes along. One thing we are considering is a bimble along the Bath to Bristol cycle path. It looks like a nice sociable ride. We're trying to work out if we should just turn round and come back when we get to Bristol, or if there will be stuff we can do while we have the bikes with us.

Also, by the time we're coming back we might be in the mood for a light lunch, the route information we found suggests there is little directly on the path, I wonder if there's somewhere nearby that's decent/interesting though.

Any advice?

Agree about Clifton. You can then cross the suspension bridge and ride down through Ashton Court estate and loop back along the river or New Cut as I think it may be called, to the city centre.

ss.great britain - already mentioned above - ride up to clifton and across the suspension bridge - down through the deer park at ashton court. Perhaps cycle back along the river or the canal rather than the cycleway to make a round trip of it.

Sounds good, how secure is bike parking around the SS Great Britain? I spend a lot of time in London and am already down 1 bike, I'm a bit paranoid about that sort of thing and neither of the bikes are likely to be 'throwaway' ones.

The Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery up in Clifton Triangle is also well worth seeing and is worth climbing Park Street for.

........send off a boat load of slaves to the New World

/pedant on/ - actually I believe they took the slaves direct from Africa to the New World, then brought tobacco back to Bristol, then summat else - money or trade goods to Africa to buy the slaves with. / pedant off/

Just outside of Bristol there is also the Fleet Air Arm Museum which is definitely worth a visit, or Cheddar Gorge!

Pop into my cousin's fashion shop, Portabella in Clifton, and pick up some treats!! Mention you are a cycling buddy of mine and you might even get a discount!

The Grain Barge pub on Hotwells is an excellent stop for a bite to eat & serves Bristol Beer Factory ales 8-)
Plenty of bicycle parking as well, but as already mentioned bring a decent lock !

Also being a boat gives great views of the docks & the SS Great Britain.

The cafe at Warmley ( approx. halfway between Bristol & Bath ) is worth a stop, great cake 8-)

Do the docks when you get to Bristol and as pervious posts mentioned a trip on the water taxis is always good. Not too many decent eateries on the path but a coffee and cake at the Warmley waiting rooms is always worth it and they now have a new garden with a tardis toilet. I would also recommend the two tunnels and then back via the canal path as you can then stop for food at Bathampton as there is the George on the canal.
