2 Tunnels is a must-ride, in my view. It's a corker. Take some little lights to make yourself more visible. You don't need lights to see your way as it is dimly lit all the way along. Whee !

On the Railway path itself, as you get to the edge of Bristol, stop for a sit down at the wooden bench on Siston Common - good edge-on view of the eastern side of the city (sorry about the noise from the ring road that south glos council built in the 90's)

A little further on, stop and have a look round Mangotsfield Station that'll remind you of it's former use. Here, a certain Arnold Ridley was inspired to write the play The Ghost Train. He is better known to us as private Godfrey (the one always mentioning his sister Dolly) from Dad's Army.

Further on still, enjoy a ride through the Staple Hill tunnel. Shop at Morrison's in Fishponds if you need lunch (it backs onto the path). Not the nicest place to have picnic benches, so go downhill a bit and eat on the sleeper bench to your left which gives you a nice view across Greenbank.

The path ends in an industrial area, the junction soon to be improved. When you exit the path, take a glance at the last two industrial units to your right - they used to house the interior sets from Casualty.

I hope you enjoy your ride along the path. I'm just lucky to have it as my daily commute:smile:

If you get thirsty at Mangotsfield station, take the branch off towards Yate etc. and within a mile you will get to The Bridge Inn at Shortwood. A very traditional pub serving a good range of 'scrumpy' as well as the normal fare. ( the cheese & onion rolls go well with a pint of Cheddar Valley - don't let the neon-orange colour put you off  )

Thanks for all of these, we've sat and read through them and are so far planning to make sure we do the tunnels in Bath and to confirm if we need locks for the bike lockers at the Bristol docks bike shop. We'll aim to leave the bikes secure there and spend a good chunk of day in Bristol following some of your suggestions before heading back. Sounds great and we'll make sure we've printed out all the relevant bits from this thread before we go. Just have to hope the weather gets better towards August.

Enjoy the trip and you may pass me at some point as the Bristol to Bath path is my daily commute with the tunnels thrown in a few days a week for some additional kms. And the canal path back from the tunnels is beautiful when the sun is shining

I did once see a cycling book with a stupidly long title, something like The 50 oddest quirky..etc etc ....bike rides which listed the Staple Hill Tunnel as a fun experience to chalk up. So you'll enjoy doing that and the Two Tunnels in Bath. Gotta love cycling through a long hole through rock listening to piped music^_^
