You could try a Spiderpodium (check Amazon) but zip tie it to the bars for extra security.

Pannier bag? I have one but my x-ray vision only works when I am facing forwards not backwards

Any more sensible suggestions ;) I don't think the spider podium is right - would like something waterproof and protective

Topeak ridecase - mounts on the stem cap. Does mean you'd need to move your cateye a bit, but I can vouch for it keeping the iPhone in place for the five months I've had it. Also survived an "off" (bike & rider separation, not iPhone & mount) without issue. Comes with a rubberized cover for foul weather (still touch-senitive). Also bought the £6 handlebar bracket for the wet weather bike.

Fair enough. But it's to be able to use it as a GPS, not as a phone, heaven forbid

Looks cool, cheers - except have to peel off the protective film which isn't ideal
You should be fine with film- the kit includes a plastic 'fibre-look' backing sheet which serves only a cosmetic purpose. The plastic "frame" clips over the device easily & securely, and I tend to leave it on 24/7, as it doesn't block the cable for recharging/syncing. Only niggle is that if placed on a surface, pressing the home button will cause the device to rock, as the back is not flat.
