I've got an Aux socket in the car and want to be able to connect my ipod to it. Should I just get a double ended aux jack (3.5mm to 3.5mm) or is there any advantage to getting a connector from the proprietary 30 pin ipod connection to aux?

Just get the usual double-ended aux jack. I have experience using those, and have never had an issue with it.
No idea about the 30 pin port -> aux though, doesn't seem worth it in my opinion!

Get a 30 pin to 3.5mm cable. The sound quality is superior as its a proper balanced line-out. If you use the headphone jack, you'll need to turn the volume up much higher and the sound isn't as good, IMHO.

I have no experience using these, so I can't say anything negative about them.
I just know that I've been perfectly satisfied with a 3.5mm <-> 3.5mm cable, and haven't noticed bad sound quality; that said, I've not experienced the 30-pin. I can imagine that it is better quality though. I suppose a lot comes down to the car/van speakers in the end too!

Thanks all for your replies. Think I'll go with 3.5 to 3.5 and see how it works out. It's certainly the cheaper option and will work for both my nano and my daughters 5th Gen Touch which has a lightening connector so wouldn't fit the 30 pin to 3.5.

If you have the USB port as well as the Aux socket it is well worth using the 30pin lead to USB . better sound quality and if you have steering wheel controls you don't need to take eyes off the road to change tracks.
