Name escapes me, but the inventor, from County Clare, offerred it to the British. They turned him down, so he sold it to the Americans. Who then used it against the British.

Checked and it was John Philip Holland.

He was Dutch?

I'd say that's spot on. I've never had an Irish whiskey that compared with a top single malt Scotch, but I've never had one I didn't like - unlike Scotch, where some of the cheap/megabrand (I'm looking at you, Bells) ones are really pretty nasty.
You can't get an Irish Whiskey.

Did I get it the wrong way round? I can never remember which is which.
In English the spellings are whisky for scotch and whiskey for Irish. So you got in the right way round.

And a wonderful invention it was too, used extensively all over the world until the Royal Navy developed one that also surfaced again.
