Defining sports by needing to buy special shoes to take part is pathetic.

No offence to all the people on this thread who have said it, but it is.

All hail the consumer society.

Nah.. Synchronised Swimming can be safely removed from the sporting annals, alongside any other discipline that has 'Artistic Impression' as a part of the scoring mechanism. :giggle:

So cycling's in then?

According to the Bridge Union it is, also recognised by the IOC. In which case this opens the door for a host of others, chess for instance, then the Monopoly and Scrabble players will demand equal status.
I agree - for me, it would be a Bridge too far!

snipped - (thank you from the bottom of my heart for not calling them flippers).

snipped.

you're missing out. The flippers game is great sport. Casually asking your dive partner "pass my flippers" always gets a reaction. Seeing the old guard trying to supress a comment after turning round to see you're well equiped for a (fairly) serious wreck dive. Never fails

My over simplistic view.....

It cannot be a sport unless you need to change your shoes to participate.

What if you wear, say, running shoes normally?? And anyway, it is a load of nonesense, you can do many sport in a lot of (albeit sometimes unsitable) forms of footwear, or, barefoot!

I can see the flaws......

Do you know how much ability and physical strength is required just to make it look like they are effortlessly standing on the bottom of the pool whilst doing what they do?
I'd like to see you doing it!

Curling is definitely in then, I mean, not only is it advisable to change your shoes for something suitable before playing, but if you fall, you can break your nose, not to mention a variety of other bones!!
