It's to do with the neurotransmitter Serotonin. Modern anti-depressant medication, such as Prozac, is classified as a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor, SSRI. It's supposed to stimulate the brain to produce more serotonin, as, to a lesser extent, various foods can.

@Accy cyclist do you take an antidepressant? Maybe a cumulative effect (plus the alcohol)

It happened again last night. I'd only eaten about a third of a 200g bar of dark hazelnut when i began to feel drowsy. I tried to fight it but it was if i'd been given sedation before an operation. I woke up a few hours later, absolutely covered in melted chocolate and hazelnuts! I'd prepared myself before, knowing this might happen,by putting on an old t-shirt and shorts, not wanting to ruin anything decent. However, the t-shirt and shorts were that covered in the stuff that i had to take them off and chuck them on the floor. My dog was straight in there, licking the stuff off. This has been happening to me for a few years now. I eat chocolate then it knocks me out! I once had a small bar on a bike ride, thinking the sugar content would give me energy, but no,i had to stop riding and walk around to keep myself from falling asleep. I mentioned this to my GP once. He laughed and said it wasn't possible. He said if i'd eaten a very large amount, the blood would rush to the stomach to help in the digestion, which could make me feel slightly drowsy as the blood isn't reaching my brain and stuff, but it shouldn't quite knock me out.
Have any of you experienced this happening to you?
If I eat more than 50 grams of chocolate of one go, I feel sleepy. The same with any other big amount of sugar. I don't have diabetes though as I'm nine stone, young and fighting fit. Feeling sleepy after chocolate does not equal diabetes. You just need to be more self-controlled with chocolate. When I eat a typical 100 gram bar. I never eat more than half in one go.

I've heard that chocolate is poisonous to humans but you would have to eat at least 2Kg in one sitting for it to have any effect. I think that you would be sick a long time before this. Probably the maximum I've eaten at one go is around 150g. What's the most any of you have eaten?

Fortunately, the median lethal dose for humans is 1000 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. That means that an 80 kg human would have to eat 5.7 kg of unsweetened dark chocolate for it to kill them (going by a theobromine content of 14 milligrams per gram of dark chocolate, although it varies). For milk chocolate, you’d have to eat around 40 kg.
