When I go out for a ride it's for exercise and pleasure and isn't a sport.
Years ago I used to do time trials. That was a competitive sport. The only one I've been good at.
Years ago I used to play rugby, very badly, and that was a competitive sport too.
I used to enjoy going to the practice ground and just practicing kicking (rugby) penalties, and that isn't a sport.
I swim for exercise. That isn't a sport.
I used to swim in races. That was sport.
An activity can be a sporting one, or a sport, or leisure. It all depends on the context.
Is practicing for a sport taking part in a sport?
I'm not sure it matters much. Sports generally have recognised governing bodies, but I'm not sure that defines an activity as a sport.
