Is it against the law to flash your lights to inform of speed traps

Can't see anything wrong with the road signs that indicate the maximum speed allowed on a particular section of road and then having the big yellow boxes to catch/warn/fine those daft enough to take their chances by speeding.

If you mean the square signs indicating the maximum speed for a certain corner? I thought those were only recommended and not enforceable? Ie the speed needs to be in a proper speed sign to be an enforceable limit...

Or did you mean something else?

The French speed cameras can be a lot less obvious:

That's a reflector. The camera is in the first photo, top right and partly out of shot. And it's in Switzerland.

Also, as a philosophical point, how is a driver indicating the presence of a camera or trap different from road signs telling drivers that there us a camera, or that this is a police speed trap area?

The sign says that a camera is, or may be used in that area, the driver is deliberately and specifically warning that a Police operation is underway and undermining that operation.

Must say i did have my doubts about that one. To restore the balance here is a picture of a real speed camera lurking behind a bridge support:

It is sited just after the limit drops to 90 km/h and a long way after the warning sign. There is a good reason why drivers should slow at that point since it is just before more traffic enters the road from a housing development.

And you have never ever gone above the speed limit. Riiiiight.
not since I was 25 and grew up got a little more sensible and realised that "why should I rush everywhere ? " . its quite nice to drive on a motorway at just below the speed limit and arrive unstressed knowing i don't have to keep a special look out for a speed camera van etc.

you should try it . it really does chill you out.

pre 25 I look back at and can't beleive i was such a dangerous driver.

Oh give me a break.
Seriously you have never strayed even 1 mph over the limit?
Get a life. You should try it.
I'm 52 and do my best not to speed partly because i cannot afford the fine and partly because i believe in the system. But even with my angelic viewpoint i do often go over the limit and then realise and slow down to a safe speed.

read what I posted, not what you think I posted.
I do have a life. mainly because I slowed down so when i did have a mishap I wasn't travelling fast enough to kill myself.
Cruise control is great- get to speed, press the button and sorted. I don't care about the money or the points , what i care about is hurting somebody because i drove too fast.

I do love it when people get all defensive over their driving , makes me laugh quite a lot.

It's a limit, not a target.
Personally, I'm quite pleased that my driving has improved since I passed a driving test nearly 30 years ago. You seem to think that getting worse is laudable. It's not.
If you're that useless a driver that you can't stay within the limit, then the roads are better off without you.
I've got a life. You seem to want to end yours, which I personally don't have a problem with.
But you think you have a right to take others out with you. That I do have a problem with.
Laws are there to protect the majority of us from self-centred dickheads.
