Hi all,

I have been using my Giant Defy road bike for last 12 months to go out with my club i ride with. My wife also got into cycyling end of last year but she only likes to go on the cycyle paths and trails around our area and not on the road. I find it difficult when i tried a few times with the road bike on these paths and i was just going to buy a cheap Hybrid to go out on weekends with her so that i can fit wider tyres, mudguards and a rack to carry my rear bag when we go out for the day but people who i speak to seem to think its a bit odd buying a Hybrid for family and general use when i already have a road bike.

What does everything think is it a bit odd wanting a hybrid. I have looked at a CX, Touring and sort of basic MTB but i seem to always want to go down the Hybrid route as i dont want to spend much

What people? No. If that's the right bike for what you want it for, go for it

It's odd to only have two bikes

If it is then I am odd.

Like you plan to, the hybrid is the bike I use when I go out for a ride with our lass, it is also my ice bike in the winter and my utility bike.

Road bike is for commuting and leisure rides.

Hahah i like that answer. Well we have 3 in the house soon and i know others have many more.

Its just i dont want to spend loads as my main cycyling will still be on the road bike and the hybrid will be used for family rides. Have my eyes set on a basic ish Giant or Specilized as they are very good prices at the min

Just remember not to wave at roadies when on your hybrid and vice versa and you will be fine.
Haha yep i know what u mean. I use to ride a Hybrid years back when space was short for keeping more than 1 bike in the house. Remember i use to wave at the road bikes and get odd looks LOL

Giant Escape City 2 here, as well as several other bikes. It's a great bit of kit for what it's designed for - gentle pootling on road and fairly gentle off-road tracks. It cost <£300 from Rutland Cycling and at that price was great value IMO.

How can anyone manage with ONLY a road bike and a hybrid? I have a hardtail MTB, a proper road bike, a carbon disc braked 'all-road' bike (which I consider to be a realist's road bike) and a hybrid. The hybrid gets used the most by far. As well as being my commuter it is often the default bike for many other rides. I did a mahoosive 185 miles ride in one day last year, guess which bike I used?

I don't particularly feel the need to justify why I own several bikes but I have said to people who query my collection that they wouldn't think anything off it if I had a sports car worth £10k in the garage.

Was thinking i could use the Hybrid during winter as well. My road bike does not take guards as i run wider tyres on it and no room so i tend to not use the road bike as much in winter.

I have put a hold deposit down on a GIant Escape 3 as the price was only £300 and i only need a basic one and nothing special.

May be worth looking here: https://www.rutlandcycling.com/facetresults.aspx?Term=Giant escape The Escape 2 (I've not checked, but I think it's a better spec than the 3) is £300 - albeit the 2016 model.

No, not odd at all - I've got two road bikes and a hybrid and do pretty much what you've outlined above: Road bikes on the road, hybrid for trails, bridleways and general pootling about with Mrs ND mainly away from roads.

And if you're looking for a no nonsense hybrid that won't break the bank, can I suggest a Carrera Subway, which is a cracking bike for the money?
