Wouldn't be the first time then!! :-)
For instance - the young rider jersey awarded in major races depends on age and the cut-off age varies from race to race.

Pension age varies according to how old you are. I should retire at 66. My sister retires at 63. A friend retires at 65.

Minimum wage varies with age.

There are all sorts of awards for young people so you need to know if an individual qualifies.

What if you need to identify a dead body? It would help to know how old the person was when (s)he died.

Age of consent?

And so on ...

I'm wondering why it matters how old someone is....
supposing you were owned a football club and you shelled out (to pick a figure completely out of the air, and bearing no relation at all to any transaction of any kind anywhere on this planet or any other) twenty four million quid and then some, and then you started to hear that the player you bought was six years older than you thought..........you'd be cheesed off, wouldn't you?

Why? You presumably based your purchase on having seen the player play and what you were buying was that ability, not their birth certificate. In fact what you are suggesting is to a large degree illegal now. You have to assess people on their ability to do the job in question, not their age and age discrimination in employment is illegal. If from your observation they played well and you could not tell they weren't the age you thought they were then what's the problem?

the reason is this - a footballer's peak years are, generally, 26 to 31. If you purchase a 24 year old of outstanding ability you expect that you will be rewarded with his golden years. A player of 30 will be just about to go downhill. Players approaching their prime sell for more than players at the end of their prime. Let's suppose that you offer a five year contract, believing the player to be 24 - you're buying years 24-29. On the other hand, if the player is really 30, then you're buying years 30 to 35 - that's not so good. What's more the resale value at the end of the contract is considerably less.

Of course it depends on the type of player. Goalkeepers enjoy a greater longevity than outfield players, but 'box-to-box' midfielder tend to wear out earlier.
