^^^^^ This all sounds very familiar! We too were promised dry weather today so I planned a ride this morning. Got up, looked out the window, and scrubbed it. It is drying up now, so I might get out yet - just not the planned ride. Like you say, the weather here doesn't lend itself to me ever becoming a really enthusiastic cyclist. I get no pleasure from getting wet or battling a headwind; so cycling is very much a leisure activity rather than a realistic mode of transport. Somehow I have managed about 2000 leisure miles so far this year, but a fair proportion of them have been on trips away from home (Orlando, France, Yorkshire). So - last night the forecasters were 'giving' us an ok day.
Was dry when I got up at 7am but now...
...it is raining steady again and the sky is battleship grey.
My nice bike ride (planned 36m and 3300' ascent) is now binned and I won't be able to get out on it again until Wednesday next week when I return from a short holiday on which we embark tonight.
I think the whole stop-start nature of cycling (well, it is for me) is probably why it hasn't really grabbed me in the 3 years since I have gotten back on a bike.
I just seem to get in a nice routine; distance starts to go up, speed starts to go up and my legs start to get with it and hills start to feel easier and wallop, something derails my momentum.
Anyway, it's wet here, hope it's dry 'there' and happy riding to you all.![]()
Bank holiday and the Lake District and you don't want rainCan you cancel any rain in Lake District at the end of the month please - we're holidaying there.
The rain we had was so heavy that very little actually got water. It ran off and formed huge flooding and puddles and mostly drained away. The land actually got very little of it which is a shame because the brook is almost completely dry.We have been having a very dry summer, it's not always sunny or hot. Yesterday I was expecting a real downpour and we just had a couple of short showers. The garden is so dry and could do with some proper rain.
No definitely nothing like that much rain. I'm sure we will get plenty of it to make up for it in winter time when it will be cold rain! The rain we had was so heavy that very little actually got water. Today's ride was a case of dodge the additional (new) gravel traps from where the torrential rain flooded down the roads and washed the sides clean (and in one or two cases away) and created new gravel hazards... and in one case some reeds and grass to mark the height of the flooding... it has all gone now, but we have mud and gravel left to mark the places that flooded.

Nice to see a reversal of the normal weather pattern today, with the northern parts getting warmth and sunshine, while the suvvern softies get a taste of what we have been getting all year.
Of course when THEY get it, the BBC can't stop reporting it. How much of the national news will be devoted to it tonight?
I hope the jet stream has finally shifted, and that it stays where it is for a long time.
