The toughest ride I've done in the Uk is "Le Terrier", a sportive in the Forest of Bowland.

3,800m climbing in 100 miles!

Compares well with Holmfirth CCs annual sportive which hits about 3400m in 88 miles.

Its running again this summer for anyone interested: https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/events/details/156469/Le-Cote-de-Holme-Moss-Sportive

It finishes off with the Strines,(admittedly in the easier direction, but suspect it will be enough given the rest of the route).

The start of the hill by Shepherds.
It's a right twat.

PS It is isn't pronounced penis-tone! (Peni-stone. There is a 'Penistone Hill' in nearby Haworth. We all pronounce it pen-is-ton.)
As in the small coin, Penny-stone
I know all about Penistone Hill, I compete in the fell-races that start/finish there, ie, Withins; http://www.woodentops.org.uk/index.php?topic=withins

Co-incidentally, the hardest (fell) race I've done in terms of ascent, was around HolmeMoss
18 miles, but 4,000 feet of climb!! (circa 1,200 metres?)
Scary ascent of Laddow Rocks!!

@Richard A Thackeray it used to be on a regular Featherstone RC club run route to Castleton, but done N to S I have done it both ways on several occasion I think S to N is harder, but its easier since they resurfaced the road for the tour, the bend at the bottom of Ewden Beck was like a cart track, only ride-able on the wrong side going up.
Out
Royston
Cawthorne
Penistone
Strines
Ladybower
Bamford
A well deseved cafe stop at Castleton

Home
Hathersage
Fox House Inn
Long descent into Sheffield
Grenoside
Birdwell
Wosbrough
Cudworth
Hemsworth

A heck of a route!!
I'm glad I never did it with them

Agreed, the section on Ewden was a grim surface

That looks a wonderful route!

I have ridden about 95% of it one time or another including some rides with about 2,500 m of climbing (which was hard enough!) but have never done it all in one day.

I would want to be a lot fitter than I am now, but it would be a great mid-summer all-day ride ... I would probably start from Whalley.

I lived in Lancaster for three years but never knew about the route through Roeburndale: it just about finished me off!

It would actually be p-e-n-i-s as in penis, and t-o-n-e as in tone, so think of it as a well-toned penis! :laugh

It's pronounced (pen-is-ton) the way you pronounce the one in Haworth

Better coming down it - I cracked 50 mph on that descent.
