If you tell the police, you'll also need to tell your insurance company...and the incident could well lead to your policy being more costly next year (indeed for the next 5 years) even if no claim is made (as a non fault accident). Technically you should actually tell them regardless if you read the policy Ts & Cs
Yes, you have to tell your insurer regardless, so shop the hit and runner to the police. Payback. They're probably uninsured or worse, else why run?

Yes.....definitely.
You dont have to give her car reg....just the basics.
If she decides to report in and you havent done so within 24 hours the courts can "do you".
Sadly I know that from experience. The other guy claimed there was damage to his and even though he didnt turn up in court I was fined and licence endorsed.

A little old lady reversed into my van the other day and caused a minor scratch on the bumper. I considered going down the insurance route but decided after a moment's thought that it wasn't worth the grief.
And the good kicking I gave her was much more therapeutic for me, and she learned a valuable lesson.
Win win!

Good point. If you dont report it, how can you (anyone) be sure the offending driver wouldn't walk into a police station and claim you hit their car ?

Because he has dashcam footage.

Talk about making a drama out of a crisis. This thread is on a par with, "Someone bumped into me in the street, should I report him for assault?" A minor little incident that should be forgotten in less than five minutes.

You may think so but that doesnt make it fact.
It IS a fact that I got "done" for exactly the same reason i.e. no damage but the other driver reported it and "claimed" there was damage.
You have, literally 24 hours.
24 hours and 15 minutes after the incident a bobby knocked on my door.
The dashcam will probably clear him but one simple phone call will avoid any chance of legal problems.

I forgot about the dashcam footage :okay:

But for others reading who've had a similar incident, such as Dave7..

And my insurance is the same re Informing them of any accident....particually Vicksters last line echoes this...

It is a minor event TBF and I suspect I wouldn' report it if it were me...but knowing it could theoretically go pear shaped not doing so, it's not right really to advise them not to report.

What a daft idea. As things stand you've suffered not a jot. Now you're proposing to put yourself to a lot of hassle and significant potential expense (if you report it to your insurers, as you 'should', your premiums will almost certainly go up) in order to gain...um...not a jot. Forget it. Move on. Next.

Sorry I've not been on, I had some really bad news after posting on here that meant I was more consumed by that than sorting this so I haven't done anything with it

Oh really? For what? His car was parked (it’s different if both cars were being driven or stationary in traffic).
Dont know the ins & outs and I may not be correct but based on my own experience I am pointing out that if the other driver, for any reason, reports it and the op doesnt the police may take action.
