Get yourself an internal 2.5 inch drive of 500Gb or more size and a drive caddy. Plug it in to your laptop via the USB port. Download Acronis True Image - you get a month's trial for free - and use it to clone the internal disc to the external disc. Open up your laptop, remove the existing hard drive, replace it with the hard drive out of the caddy, close it all up and switch it on. Voila, you now how 250+Gb free on your laptop. Just make sure when you buy it that the hard drive connector of the new disc is the same as the internal drive.

Given that the OP has very liitle knowledge of computers, I would very strongly advise against this route!

Netbooks aren't like desktop PCs where removing 6 screws leaves you with a HDD in your hand.

Just a quick note of caution- some netbooks are easier to install the memory than others!

I don't have an Aspire One and I don't know your level of ability but it's worth checking first before you risk damaging your machine.

I've added memory to a number of Laptops some are definitely easier than others.

I would agree with those above that recommended an external drive. Apart from anything else it's good insurance for when your Netbook/Laptop/Computer dies

This notebook has a maximum of 2 GB RAM capacity and it's a straight forward job to replace the memory module.

My wife has one and I put 2 GB but the real killer of this netbook is the Windows 7. I have a Samsung netbook also with 2GB but running Ubuntu and the difference is huge.

I'm a big fan of Netbooks - not so much of Acer Netbooks though.

I have viewed a very useful video on YouTube of how to replace the memory and I am sure that if it follow that, then I will be able to change the RAM without any problems.

So it would be better to get an external hard drive? In that case where would be the best place to get them from. I am sure faulty and below expectation models are out there and I dont want to be wasting money on something which is likely to underperform.

I saw this video just now and that's the right method, just be careful not to brake the keyboard cable ^_^

Interestingly that netbook is running Ubuntu.... I wish my wife let me install Ubuntu in her Netbook ^_^

The choice of external drives is large and you can get them from places like ebuyer, dabs, Maplin, etc. Read the reviews to choose the one that fits your requirements.

Okey dokey.

When it comes to drives recommendations tend to be a matter of personal preference with other folks equally likely to claim that they don't like that brand.
If you delete the photos it will free up a lot of space. If you're not prepared to delete them then you need two external drives if you intend to free up space as otherwise without backup copies you'll run the risk of losing everything should the drive die (external drives are vulnerable to being dropped/thrown by young relatives).
What degree are you doing and will it involve specialized software as that netbook runs on an atom which isn't a particularly powerful processor so check the requirements of any additional software as a laptop might be a better choice.

Well I have now upgraded my RAM and TBH I cannot tell a massive difference. I think if I copy the majority of the files onto an external drive, it should quicken things up.

t the feeling that you confuse RAM and HDD space.

You just upgraded the RAM which would enable to run programs more easily.

Making more space on the hard drive should not make your system faster, unless, you had no space left.

My advise to you is this:

Download Ubuntu and create a bootable USB stick ( plenty of information on how to do this on the next, in fact I think Ubuntu website tells you how to do it)

Then you need to go into your netbook bios and get it to boot from a USB drive.

Have a go at running a live session and see if you could get used to it. See if you see an improvement in speed etc.

If you like it then you could consider to run Ubuntu alongside your windows 7.

Since it seems he's got RAM & HDD space mixed up (apologies Matt if this isn't the case!) then that will probably be way over his head!

No offence intended Matt.

None taken.

FAO everyone, I am not getting confused between RAM and HDD. I have upgraded my RAM, all I need now is either an external HDD drive or (as explained by the guy in the local computer shop today) to waste £100 on him cloning my drive to a ghost drive which is bigger and then putting the old drive in a case (£75 for the new drive, £20 for the ghost, £5 for the case (he said he would discount it)). I explained to him that I can find drives online for about £50 (ebuyer, etc) so he said just do that then.
