It's actually tomorrow but I'm at work and have a late meeting tomorrow so won't see him in the evening. He's 6 btw...

Personally I'd just tell him the truth. Kids arnt stupid, they know when people tell them fibs. Tell him that because you won't he home until late tomorrow,that you want to celebrate his birthday today with him. He'll understand and accept that much more than you think. They're clever little blighters.

i personally would have gone with "lets celebrate it today coz I'm at work tomorrow" rather than risk other people giving the game away.

There are two things it's not wrong to tell a 6 year-old. 1) When you hear that music playing, it means the ice-cream man has run out of ice-cream and 2) The internet closes down at 6pm.

He doesn't really get the whole birthday thing...although no formal diagnosis yet, we're pretty sure he's on the autistic spectrum and his vocabulary and comprehension is quite limited. Saying that though, he is having a lovely day :-)
