I've had my first puncture with the gatorskins, I've managed 900miles.

I've picked out two large pieces of glass(from the centre of the tyre ie tarmac contact point) , if I squeeze the tyre I can see the "mesh" inside ie the cut has gone all the way through the rubber.

Is my tyre more or less had it of should I fix the tube and be more carefull what I ride through?

At twenty pound a tyre thems not cheap!

Just take the glass out, it should be fine.

I ride on gators Hicky...
I've ridden one with a quite large slit for 6 months. I tend to lay a piece of re-inforcing tape between the innertube and the slit if its over 5mm say, just belt and braces.
Currently riding one that sounds very similar to yours...its been fine so far.

They are a bit prone to damage on the soft outer shell. I console myself that for me...punctures are rare (and no, i dont mind mentioning that word  )

Gorrilla tape type stuff?

My tyres have plenty of cuts and slits and are perfectly fine to keep using hicky.
I have heard people put a dab of rubber solution or similar into the holes to fill them, I tried once with superglue but it wasn't very good.
Mine have the blue smart guard layer under the surface and it is visible on a couple of the larger cuts, but they are 3000 miles old now.

There's an easy way to realise your tyres are too worm, ride them and see how many flats you get

As for the tyre actually failing, they're tough bit's of kit, I've worn the odd one very worn and with serious damage and they kept going way beyond the point I expected them to fall apart

Sorry Hicky, i should have said i did that when the slit had gone through the re-inforcing and potentially allowed the innertube to push its way out. You used to get a piece of special cloth in puncture outfits for just this job, but i havn't seen any in years.
If the slit hasnt gone through the casing, i wouldn't worry.

I used a bit of emery tape (like sandpaper but with a cloth interweave..for metal) Its really strong, and face the abrasive side outwards (away from the innertube). Its not foolproof, but extends the life of an already damaged tyre.
