I think thats what happened to me. They were avoiding wider handlebars but when on drops they see your hand as being the "edge of the overtake".

Aye I've always thought extra wide shoulders were a good idea.(Like an American footballer)

I noticed something similar going from flats to bullhorn bars. Flat bars are typically between 520 & 600mm wide. Drops/bullhorns are typically sub-500mm wide. I know that extra 50mm or so per-side doesn't seem that much but visually it makes a cyclist look a lot narrower, your arms aren't flairing out from your shoulders. The result is closer passes as the motorist perceives your road position differently. My best advice is to ride a little further out than you used to.

You should try flat-bar with a bar end mirror!! I've had mine clipped twice by knobs overtaking too close:angry:

That's me too. Just measured the 2. The drops are 5 inches narrower plus the mirrors.

I think the other thing with drops I found was that you were lower down. More hunched compared to my old flatbar. I think if riding past parked cars or junctions I found I needed to sit up a little.

I thought of sawing a couple of inches off my bars but not sure whether to or not. It's quite a difference from the drop bar bike, especially when filtering through tightish gaps, although I do fold the mirror in when I do this.
