I bought a Whyte Charing Cross less than 2 years ago and have only used it in good weather on roads yet already have had 3 freewheel cassettes.
my friend has had a Whyte winter road bike for just over a year and his third free wheel failed today and it was only replaced last October and has done very few miles.
Rest of bike OK but would not buy another one due to these failures

A lot of makers skimp on freehubs - which I think is what you mean failed on your bike - because hubs go largely un-noticed by buyers.

The Charing Cross has a 'Whyte' branded freehub which will be rubbish - as you've found.

Replace it with a Shimano one and all will be well.

I recently bought a Trek 7.2 Disc for £450. I was already stretching my budget so didn't really look at Whyte bikes. Are they much better?

I can't fault my cambridge. Especially as it was £400 used, having been ridden once (£900 rrp)

I wouldn't buy a bike without a carbon fork myself, weight and comfort

I've done 1200 mostly dry miles and have changed nothing but the tyres (to marathon plus)

I asked about the freehub failures as I have done over 4500 miles on my Stirling and 4600 miles on my Charing Cross without any failures.
