Now there's a question. Need a new bike only got £300 to spend, old bike is Raleigh Esprit that weighs 12kg. Can I get a better, lighter bike for £300. Triban 3 maybe?
I htink the OP meant the TDF compared to the Raliegh but as you say the tribans offer the best bang for the buck , on the flat the weight is not so much of an issue although on the hills your lugging that extra weight up the hill.Today i rode my rigid MTB to work over the same route, going in on a mainly flat it was very similar time but on the hillier return route it was a good 3 minutes slower over 10 miles even with slicks. The TDF and Triban are not the same weight. The Triban is lighter due to the carbon forks.
That said the weight is all down to preference really, lighter doesn't mean faster it just means faster to accelerate and slow down. You power it. The fitter you are the faster you go.
I would say Triban 3 (red), Triban 3a (White) and the TDF comparison is more a question of triple vs compact double. The clearance on the triban is tight where as on the TDF it's bigger.
£300 would get you a very nice second hand retro machine that would be lighter than exsisting bike

Yes a second hand bike can offer more bang for the buck assuming the OP knows what potential problems to look for .Yup, £300 got me a Dura Ace / Ultegra mix bike from a very reputable source. Poor bike didn't deserve my 'generously cut' physique bearing down on it.

I got my 9mth old Giant Defy (a 1.5) that will get some questions.
