My sister's tumble drier is playing up. She lives too far away fro me to go round and tinker it to destruction, so I was wondering if anyone might be able to advise, before she calls anyone in (she's a bit skint).

She says: "on the 20 minute programme or the full dry programme the same thing happens. It starts off quite happily and does perhaps a dozen rotations, then it stops and tries to do reverse revolutions and as soon as it starts to do the reverse revolutions, it trips the electrics."

Oh, she did also say that the first sign something was wrong was "when, with no warning, I lost all electricity."

Does that sound like a worn out bush in the motor? Either way, any thoughts on whether it's likely to be a fix worth fixing, or whether she should just cut her losses and get a 'new' one on ebay for a ton?

Thanks if you can help.

Have you googled the brand and the fault?

The Haynes washer and drier repair manual is pretty handy if you decide to have a go at fixing it.

It's easy to fit new brushes to a washing machine. Dunno about a drier.

Can she manually turn the drum in the opposite direction?

If it were me, I'd look for a used one on Gumtree or FB marketplace. And to echo Globalti, if she's skint why is she using a dryer? A clothes horse or washing line can be had for £8

to reverse a universal motor ( it will be if it has Brushes) you change the magnetic field . sounds like on of the field coils has developed a fault to earth . its fine in forwards as its isolated from the L and N , but as soon as the electronics switches over to reverse , bip , out goes the trip as theres a fault .

Reconditioned motors can be bought for washing machines and I've fitted a couple over the years. I kept my old machine going for 17 years until Mrs Gti ruled that it was no good at washing delicates and had to be thrown away. I never quite understood how one revolving drum of soapy water at 30c could be any better than another revolving drum of soapy water at 30c but anything for a quiet life and the poor machine owed me nothing by then.

If it's the logic board, all electric lost, she'd be safer unplugging it. The visible side of the electricity loss may be the only fault.

Depending on the age, make & model of the machine in question, it may well be cheaper & safer to replace the machine. The "Spock/Vulcan Boards" are often just the start of things going wrong.

is the mains plug wired or moulded on ?
if the former easy to check, unlikely but it could be just a loose wire in the plug.

When was the last time she cleaned the filter(s)? When I encounter problematic dryers in venues, it's ALWAYS because they havn't been cleaned out by previous companies. We used to have one in a venue I worked in that routinely blew fuses if it wasn't cleaned out regularly.

Edited to add: If you call her and ask, and the answer is 'what filter?' or something along those lines, you've probably found the problem...!
