or a piece of software where I can work out a specific route and it'll calculate the distance? I'd like to plan out a ride and see how many miles it'll be before I set out.

There's a website (think it has an app too) that works as a cycle routes planner. Can remember the name so just Google 'cycle routes planner'

I just use M'soft Autoroute, start from home and pick out a few waypoints to visit. You can print out the map for your back pocket for the journey.

I also have the 'my tracks' app on my phone so I can see where I have been. The strava app won't work for me, for some reason.

The CycleStreets app is reasonable.

Type in the start and destination and it will give you fast, quiet and medium routes, choose which one you want and then either use it as it stands, or as a base for your own route.

Not at all, but if I want to say do a 10 (ish) mile ride how would I work that out on a map?

IMO, RidewithGPS, is by far the superior route planning website out of Mapmyride and Bikeroutetoaster. The former is awkward in the file formatting (at least it used to be, maybe they rectified this farce), the latter has the shittest UI conceivable!
