Bummer. Not a lot you can do really. You could try to ask about cctv I guess but I think that you probably won't get anywhere. You might not hear anything regarding the camera flash. They don't send fines to everyone, I was told once. Probably wrongly though.

After dusk, lights on? I find flicking the fog lights looks like a brake light enough to back someone off at that time of night, just a flash of brighter red is conditioned enough into peoples brains to think brake. I tend to blatantly slow right down as soon as it becomes apparent I've got an idiot on my tail. 90% take the hint and back off, the rest either scream past or just sit too close but at a speed I feel safe to manoeuvre with them behind me.

Enforcement will tell you there's always adequate warning you're in a speed cam area, they only put cameras at points where accidents have occurred previously and its best you keep your eyes on what you're driving towards at 30+ MPH. (unexpected vehicle, bike, person popping out of side street, pavement, pub etc) & not spend so much time in your RVM you're that unaware of your immediate surroundings & SMIDSY the fixed street furniture.

You are the one driving not the one in the other car.

As for not wanting to brake in case he ran into you. by using engine braking only although you will reduce speed more slowly you are not showing him any brake lights and therefor have a greater risk of being hit from behind.

just accept the 3 points on my licence and call myself an idiot for not noticing the speed camera myself...

You might get offered a place on a speed awareness course, rather than points and fine, if your license is currently clean, the constabulury involved runs these courses, and you didn't break the speed limit by too much.

Also, if they fail to serve you NIP within 14 days of the offence, you can reject it.

Well, finally got the Notice 9 weeks after the speed camera flashed... "35mph entering a 30mph limit".

This is the first notification of the offence [it was me] - the car is a contract hire car through VW, so it must have taken this long to get returned by VW and tracked back to my company as the contract hirer.

 Thanks Fnaar, you made i laugh!

Fine went up from £60 to £100 + £15 costs on the 15th August... just 9 days before I went past the camera!

If the camera's anything like the ones round (about 100 mile radius) here then it won't have any film in it. If it is still in use your speed is your responsibility and you'll have to accept it. Just go on the course if it's offered.

You have fourteen days to be sent the notice of intended prosecution. As others have said, the circumstances you give unfortunately aren't a defence - you could have just braked carefully anyway. There would have been a defence of you were under genuine duress, but that's more for circumstances such as "the car behind contained a man who was trying to kill me armed with a knife" than a standard tailgater.

Just hope that the NIP isn't sent out, fingers crossed!

Argh, I hate not having tapatalk. Keep missing new pages.

If you can confirm the date that the registered keeper got the letter, and if that was more than fourteen days past the offence, then you don't have to accept the fine. As it's only got to you 9 weeks later it may be worth checking!

I would check the local constabulary rules. In our local area it's 10% +2mph so in a 30 zone you could contest it as speedo inaccuracy saving the cost of the course but all local authorities have different rules so it may or may not be stricter.

Go with the course. It costs a bit more but you should have no points on your licence. Content it and lose, you'll get a much bigger slap!

Back to the OP, why worry if someone is hassling you? If necessary, just take your foot off the accelerator and leave it off. Eventually they'll get the hint, give you a friendly toot and a Gareth Hunt wave and be on their merry way. You will have no courses or points but they will still be a c*nt

If you see him again followed by him tailgating just emergency stop and say an animal ran across the road. Claim whiplash(more the merrier) and go to the most expensive garage. Send his premiums through the roof. See if his brakes are really good enough to avoid the car in front as they did the speed camera.(silly hat on)
