Mass protest at the weekend in response to Police being a bit over zealous with regards stop and search, numerous stories in the press of jobsworths threatening old dears and then I read this:

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20100126/tuk-presenters-quizzed-over-hairdryers-6323e80.html

FFS terrorists are pretty well established to have never walked around with glittery hair dryers and a f***ing film crew. Add to that "spokesmen" for the Police openly lied to the press with regards jean charles de menezes incident people will now be starting to think a certain proportion of the Police Forces around the UK are openly seeking to control information for their own personal benefit.

Edit: and a quick google has turned up no info showing that any terrorist has ever been found through sec44 stop and search. Interesting that.

I suppose that the police must get really bored, what with there being nothing else for them to be doing on the streets of the capital city of this country.

Oh, wait.

Oh, don't get me wrong, anything that gets in the way of ITV making any sort of programme, is, in 100% of cases, a wonderful thing.

And, i could also argue that ITV are, in fact, terrorists.

The fact is I'm not one, and I don't expect to be treated like one because I have a backpack on.

It does beg the question - "what the F are they going to do when the Olympics are on in 2012 ?" stop every tourist with a camera and backpack ?

Yeah, this was the subject of the "serious" bit on Charlie Brooker's NewsWipe last night. As he said, it makes you think.
It's repeated tomorrow at 10pm on BBC4 and worth watching. Cos the rest of it is bloody hilarious.

That was really interesting - the interview with that American journo, who flagged up the absolutely fundamental divide between American and British journalism on this point: the fact that in America, you do not quote 'unnamed sources'. You just don't do it. It's considered unprofessional, and your editor would have your guts for garters. (This has among other things fuelled important plot points in, eg, The Wire.) Whereas the British journalist faces no such constraints, and is free to 'quote' (or fabricate) such unnamed sources without an issue even arising. Hence all the crap about Menezes leaping barriers, refusing to stop when cautioned and all the rest of it.

The unamed sources thing has been pretty much used as an excuse to let people get away with making stuff up in the past, though it has been used to protect employeree whistleblowers in cases of corruption.

The point is can you validate your source? Is what they say an "official line" with no independent sources of information? Luckily, eventually, the Jena Charles situation came out with the truth because the guy was surrounded by several members of the public.

these protesters, being canny items, will know that the Government's response will, in time, be to offer them ID cards...........

The official government line is already "if you want to carry a camera on the streets, carry ID or else". Doesnt matter what camera you have, either.

NuLabour have many, many times pushed through that they want everyone to carry ID as it is. They also want a national DNA database regardless of convictions or not. As things like the internet, mobile phone usage and TV expand in use, we are becoming a nation of restricted information.
