The eternally ever-popular cruise holiday is my idea of hell-on-Earth.

Very goods friends of ours love them and do about two a year, they persuaded us to do a taster cruise a few years ago, it was absolute hell on earth, never again. Fine if all you want to do is endlessly eat all day, but that just isn't us.

I've been on numerous cruises, most of them between Dover & Calais. One of them, off Corfu, was even pedal powered. Several others were paddle powered.

My wife and teen daughter like them as they get to see places they might not see again. They were in Western Med recently testing coffees, hot chocolate and pastries in small cafes in various countries.

Indeed, this is the main benefit or small places that are hard to reach or not somewhere to stay a week (I am going on my 2nd Caribbean cruise in February, 3 days at sea, 7 days off at different places). Clearly you get what you pay for an have to select your company and itinerary carefully. This'll probably be my last Caribbean one, but I would like to visit the fjords, boat being the only way to see easily

Re Norway there is a small Norwegian company Hurtigruten look good but not cheap.

Re fuel I would have thought cruise lines buy it a year in advance to negotiate prices

My local piece of seafront has an uncomfortable relationship with the cruise industry.

The area is completely taken over with an operation that seems to be focussed on taking the inmates straight off the boat and onto waiting buses headed straight for the city centre.

I guess the quid that they get for their pro quo is that tendering takes so long that some people must be waiting so long that they end up spending more than just a penny in the interim.

Your first paragraph had me thinking you lived in Brighton 😉

I know a lot of these boats remained moored up due to a lack of water with a boat replacement bus service transferring customers between boatels.

This year, yes, particularly on the Rhine and Danube. It has happened in the past, but not to the same extent as this year.

Usually it has only been fairly short stretches of the rivers that have not been navigable (and it was high water levels meaning they couldn't get under bridges as often as it was low water levels), and the companies involved have transferred people between boats but this year was so much river that it wasn't practical to even do that.

We did contemplate a 'coastal' cruise along Croatia etc. Unfortunately my wife could not bring herself to do it**
**some years ago we were on the overnight Rotterdam to Hull when, at 02.00 and fast asleep we were rudely woken up to be told the ship had a fire that was out of control. So, pitch black, middle of the North Sea, at our muster station and wearing life jackets we were to say the least quite scared. Fortunately the fire was eventually brought under control.
Upshot was she just could not bring herself to be on a ship and without sight of land.

I don't think you are ever out of sight of land on those coastal/island cruises in Croatia.

are they small ? I guess compared to the main cruise lines, but theyre forever advertising on Classic FM and UK Gold.

Ive always been attracted to the idea of going on a cruise, I like the sea, handy since I live near the coast, and I kind of like the idea of a floating hotel with lots of bars and restaurants to try, and I dont think id be bored by sea days as I could just sit and stare at the sea for hours, or take a few good books to read, easy supply of coffee or alcohol and Im sure Id be fine.

but Ive never done one, and probably not likely to, I dont really enjoy things that are too busy and Id always be fretting about not being able to find space to fit in, especially as a single traveller, because youre very much not the type of passenger the cruise line wants anyway.

I can at least say I stepped on board QE2 once and had a tour around, we knew one of the crew working on board at the time and there was a layover spare day in the schedule, possibly a crew change and they were allowed to invite friends and family on board to see them off, anyway we were allowed within reason to basically wander around the ship and have a look at various bits, like the library and gym, swimming pools, none of the bars/restaurants were open, and I dont think we were allowed in some of them. But it was interesting, it just never triggered a desire to book a cruise.

I just watch Emma cruises on Youtube instead now^_^
