The crucial parts of those cleats are on their upper surfaces where the "claw" action of the pedal grips them so the underneath can take a lot of damage. As they wear you are more likely to experience sloppiness on the pedal than any clipping or unclipping problem.

I would say that it's down cheap Wellgo plastic unless you're literally stopping yourself with them instead of using the brakes.

These are mine after about 9-12 rides.

I have a decent pair of spd mtb shoes that've so far lasted 15 years and have been walked in many miles after puncture walks home etc. They're a bit heavy but i prefer to be able to walk and not have to slide!:thumbsup:
