Is this not a bit too expensive?

Cheap at the moment - look at those little stars on the 531 sticker!

Then google Raleigh Ilkeston.

Idiot collectors i'm afraid but they know a rarity when they see one.

Now the bids have been cancelled with the explanation of mistaken bid! Thing is, when you do this you should then re-enter your correct bid immediately afterwards, but that hasn't happened, it's sat at a starting bid of £250 with no bids on it!

Could be a bargain for you there AP

A mistaken bid from China, apparently.
I emailed the vendor to ask if there was something unique about the bike that didn't show.
It does look nice, but far too big for me.

Would make a good fixed, but not at that price.

I don't get it--what does a comparable modern steel frame run you?

By means of comparison, a Surly frame in 4130 from Brixton Cycles is just north of £300. Mercian? North of £600, Pegoretti?

So yeah, it's not 'free to a good home', the guy evidently has a clue he's got a brand and a frame sticker that means something on his hands.

There are NO bids! The starting price is £250.

2 bids have been cancelled. The highest was £2,600.

"It is worth at most ten percent of asking price, it is a nice Record Ace and it has the Campag option but it's still not worth that much"

I think £25 is a bit unrealistic.

The bids were likely fake and place by the seller so he was expecting stupid money for it.

So yes it is worth ten percent of the asking price.

those 531 Raleigh bikes could be pretty - I had a 531C which got crumpled when it hit a taxi, but it was a fantastic bike - lively, yet comfortable. Compared with a modern bike they're not so clever, though

+1 Pete - the top two bidders are the same who are said to have wrongly bid and pulled out from the one in the OP.

Can't really see the hubs too well, but if they are the sheriff star Campag large flange they are a couple of hundred notes a piece each on their own.

Scroll down to see supersized pics - but the hubs are Record Strada as are the cranks (the left crank is prone to cracking) so the kit is £200 tops.

Mind you the frame is tasty.

Ah thanks I never noticed those pics.

I presume when you say that the kit is £200 tops, you are just talking about the wheels.

I never cease to be surprised by how some vintage kits appreciate - I found a couple of days ago a Nuovo Gran Sport crankset went for £100 - I bought a set for £18 all in only a couple of years ago...
