Is this right?

Picked up my new bike (more pictures coming soon) and this is the fixed side. Is there not meant to be a lock ring or is this ok?

It looks like the black ring is the lock ring. It's hard to tell from the pic. Does it look like this?

Can you wipe the white shoot off? Difficult to see with the grease on there.

EDIT: At a 1st guess I thought the black part might be the lockring hence why asking to wipe away the white grease so could see the slots on the lockring if present, but I realised clicking the image makes it bigger. On closer inspection, it looks like the threaded part of the hub where the lockring should be, to me it looks like the lockring is missing and thats just part of the hub.

You dont NEED a lockring, especially if using brakes, the cog will tighten on very tight once you ride it up a hill. But if you are going to be leg braking or even skid stopping, I'd want one for security. Lockrings come in several different threads (french, italian etc) so make sure you buy the right one for the hub. Most are pretty standard and your LBS will know what fits a formula hub, but stuff like Mavics need a specific lockring thread, i.e. dont put a Mavic (or possibly even Miche) Lockring on that hub, just for future reference

Looks like they have greased the thread but not actually fitted the lock ring.

Take it back the shop for them to sort.

Can a lock ring be threaded on the outside? The sprocket is screwed onto a silver threaded bit which is attached the hub and then this black bit is screwed onto the silver bit, but it's got threads on the outside. Which is what confused me.

So going on basic fixed cog, lockring and hub assembly.

1) The cog passes over the smaller thread and screws onto the hub on the larger thread, righty tighty.
2) The lockring then goes on the other outer and smaller thread, left to tighten it. Will need a lockring or bottom bracket spanner.

Thats all there is to it usually.

You can you take the cog off and have a look and the hub to check that this black part is not just part of the hub if you want. I am thinking based on the hub casing being black that the only thing that has been screwed on is the cog and its a normal hub and this black threaded bit is part of the hub casing.

It looks like a normal hub and if you look at the cog, it has a recess where the lockring would snug up in.

In short, as I see my last post is a bit waffley.

All of the things you think are screwed on, likely arent, they are likely the hub casing. That black threaded bit is most likely part of the hub casing. Just screw a lockring onto it (it tightens when turned to the left/anti-clockwise, reverse threaded) and it will snug up into that little recess in the cog. Get a lockring spanner on it and nip it up*.

*It doesnt need to be mega tight and chances are when you ride it, the cog will tighten on further anyway leaving the lockring loose, when this happens nip the lockring up again.
