Pedantry is what I do best....

I guess it depends on where you start from. 'A little' from the gutter, or the middle of a painted cycle lane wouldn't be the same as primary no, but a little from a strong secondary position could well put you in primary, depending on the width of the lane. I wold imagine BentMikey was advocating primary, or a very strong secondary. I play it by ear - some roads you just know you need to be more assertive on.

Well that is confusing to me, primary to me would be taking the primary position in the "all vehicle lane" i.e. in the middle of this lane which would actually put you 2/3rds from th left of the gutter.

Agghhh actually it is wrecking my head, let's just leave it as

i) the cyclehatingmotorist was talking cr*p
ii) it's good to move into a stronger position at these left turns to help prevent a left hook and also to improve visibility.

Thanks, it sounds like good sensible advice. I will try and adapt my cycling as often in a onroad cycle line I adopt the mentality of forgetting about the cars to my right and just assuming the will see/give way to me as appropriate.

Ah, I get you. I think where we differ is on whether the cycle lane is part of the all-vehicle lane, or an extra on the side so to speak. I think the former, so moving into primary would mean being in primary for the whole lane, not just primary for the bit outside the bike lane. This would be so much easier to explain with a pen and paper....

Here's why your motorist "friend" is wrong:

Turning left

182

Use your mirrors and give a left-turn signal well before you turn left. Do not overtake just before you turn left and watch out for traffic coming up on your left before you make the turn, especially if driving a large vehicle. Cyclists, motorcyclists and other road users in particular may be hidden from your view.

When turning
• keep as close to the left as is safe and practicable
• give way to any vehicles using a bus lane, cycle lane or tramway from either direction
