Is this what spinning classes are like?

I do a couple of classes a week or I used to. They changed the instructor last week and the new guy tried to get us to do something similar . He can bolt!!!

That's not spinning, it's studio cycling. Big difference!
I love spinning. The instructor is a cyclist and his classes are a lot different to other spin sessions I've done. It's all about recreating a ride, but indoors.
One week we did the team pursuit, hilarious!

I'm booked in for a disco-spinning session at a mate's fundraiser and am dreading it; I can certainly use a bicycle to at least a minimal level of ability but doing so while being shouted at by someone far fitter than I while being deafened by precisely the sort of music that grips my shoot does not appeal. I will cheerfully have my mind changed.

One question though, does one wear bibshorts and cycling top or shorts and tee-shirt?

Padded shorts and whatever you like on the top. I used to wear the wicking polo shirts, as opposed to proper jersies, although wore one a couple of times. SPD shoes a few times, although I came unclipped on my left foot on two seperate occasions. Both times during a flat-out sprint. Scary stuff

Seriously? These bikes have SPD clips?

As at least 90% of my enjoyment from cycling comes from enjoying the scenery and countryside, I have little desire to ride a bike while looking at a wall.

A chap from another branch was telling me about how he spend £450 on some software that connects up to his very expensive turbo trainer, and how he's just spend a big wad of cash on a projector and curved screen so he can really feel like he's outside. I think the total (excluding his bike) was just over £1000. My response was that my single speed cost a total of £120 to build...

The ones in my classes did. I believe it's pretty standard. Certainly have toe-clips on the reverse side of the pedal from the SPD side. Vast majority of folk will just wear normal gym trainers and use the toe clip. You need to be secured to the pedals quite tight. You're going to be putting a lot of force through the pedals, pretty much non-stop for 45 mins or so...

Spinning is not a surrogate bike ride. At my gym, it's a cardio workout, which focusses on different muscle groups, espcially core. It's a companion to cycling, not a replacement for it. I really enjoy classes and think it has been quite beneficial to my general cycling. Also, several members of my gym who are regular spinners have gone on to buy bikes and we now have regular ride outs from the gym. I suspect they woldn't be cyclists now if it hadn't been for spinning.
