Uh oh, not good. Any idea how much performance or economy you'll lose?
No they are keeping really quiet about what they intend to do and how it will affect the car. Put it this way I'm not going to be rushing to get to the head of the queue, I'll let others go first and iron out any problems.

I'm on my fourth VAG product (Passat diesel) and I like them very much. The silly thing about all this is that plenty of other car manufacturers have had to make expensive and embarrassing recalls and they ALL cheat on the fuel consumption tests. People have very short memories though.

Example: three recalls by Toyota: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009–11_Toyota_vehicle_recalls

Yes but those recalls were not to correct systematic fraud on an unprecedented scale.
does the "I'm Sorry Message" not indicate that yours is affected - they're hardly going to say 'you will be pleased to know you have been poisoning evryone in your community'

I'm waiting for the Skoda details, my wifes Yeti has the euro5 EA189 engine in it.
Mr Summerdays looked it up whilst I was out yesterday so I don't know the exact message but ours is going to be recalled!. We've had VW Passats for the last 20 years, and before that a VW... Err Jetta ...

I supected my diesel VW Passat wouldn't be affected as, from the limited information so far, it's 6 months or so too old. Thankfully the VIN checked on the VW site confirms that.

You are spot on there, Vern. I, for one, have mostly bought VWs since I began owning cars 38 years ago. With the exception of a Merc C class and an Audi, they have all been VWs. Not any longer. This current one will be the last I buy.

I also have owed VW's from 1973 to 2002. I wouldn't buy another neither.

and before that a VW... Err Jetta ...

Me too, I had a Jetta for 13 years, built like a tank!

If it only cheats on the test and not in normal use then what's wrong with the car?

OK, the ethics stink but not sure why the cars need a recall.

I own a VW and will also.most certainly by another or an Audi.

The Audi dealer I do work for does not seem to have slowed down business wise.

Because it's fooling the tests to say it is within a certain standard. Unfortunately in reality, it's coughing out toxic pollutants like an old Massey Ferguson.

Will remapping the ECU make it any more fuel efficient / cleaner during normal use? Subaru have a cheat in the ECU to fool the drive by noise test but runs normally the rest of the time.

On Subarus more powerful models the performance packs aren't installed until after the vehicle is registered, thus legally sidestepping the problem. In their defence they've never made any secret of the practice, so it's not a case of sheer dishonesty like VW.

Motorbike manufacturers have long since engineered a dip in the performance curve to dodge noise regs. Things came to a head with the FJ1200in the 1980s, when the original development prototypes failed the tests because they were wheelspinning past the microphones.

Yep, the PPP is an aftermarket approved mod but the cheat in the DENSO ECU is from the factory.

I agree that the cheat us unethical, but I was just wondering why they needed a recall and reflash of the ECU if there is no problem during normal operation?
