@User9609 I think you actually bring up a good point about the whole thing. Most people don't understand the emissions issues. When buying a car colour is probably more important to a lot of people, it's new, so you believe it complies to everything, be that safety features or the latest EU levels.
Emissions does play a part, but I'd say to most people only as part of 'how much VED will it cost?' and 'how economical is it' - practical stuff that will cost you money to run it. With a new car you're not likely to worry about whats coming out of the exhaust until it comes round for it's first MOT, 3 (and possibly now 4) years later. And even then it's likely it will pass with the probe up it's exhaust from local test station - the US limits where it all started are lower than ours and the official tests are done in lab conditions.
Diesels are a lot cleaner, even without the fraud, than they used to be. Wonder how much it's balanced out though with the push there was for diesel cars and there now being a lot more of them on the road.

Not been in touch yet ... I'd forgotten about it to be honest. Our car is serviced locally by the parent of one of my children children's friends, but I assume we will be informed by letter when the time comes.

Edit: sorry John... You aren't the parent of any of my children:giggle:

You are spot on there, Vern. I, for one, have mostly bought VWs since I began owning cars 38 years ago. With the exception of a Merc C class and an Audi, they have all been VWs. Not any longer. This current one will be the last I buy.
Probably never a better time to go out & by a VW group VW/Audi/Skoda as they now have a lot of brand confidence rebuilding to do, they should be playing nicely.

Hasn't put me off considering a Skoda *finances permitting*.

VW are playing for time while a German university searches for evidence that all the other big car manufacturers also cheated. Meanwhile in the USA my brother who owns an affected Jetta diesel received $1000 from VW as a "bung" to keep him quiet. So far no American owners have started a class action against VW but you can be sure it will happen, and will run and run, keeping lawyers happy for years.

You'll have sold it by then, I suspect.
No... We tend to keep a car for years... And we only bought this one 12 months ago!

It says:
If it's a 1.2 or 2.0 then it's a software update taking half an hour, whereas a 1.6 will require software AND a flow transformer which will take an hour!

This whole thing is turning into a farce.......I think there are many VW owners who are also hacked off. I have a VW Gold 2 ltr TDI but my particular engine doesn't seem to have the problem. It seems to be one of the earlier engines that wasn't badged to conform to the latest EU standard. Having said that it doesn't meet any of the emission or performance standards that were claimed in the advertising. It said that I could get 60mpg average on motorway driving.....I'm lucky to get 45!! I won't be getting another VW (even though I've mostly had them since I was 20 - with the exception of 3 of my cars)
We have a 2.0 I think.... (I get bored easily with cars so details such as what it is doesn't interest me), but it does about mid 50's mpg, though it seems to prefer A roads to the motorway from a mpg point of view. And it's our 4th VW!
