Is your bike off the peg?

That's as in bog standard, as delivered to the shop, nothing changed or upgraded?

None of my bikes is like that. Even the ones that aren't custom builds have virtually none of their original equipment left, and the one I'm thinking of buying will be extensively "breathed upon" before I put significant miles on it.

Is there anybody here who just buys a bike and rides it, without ever thinking of changing anything about it?

How much does it cost to Oldham?
One of them i've built myself (frame included-pics soon (yeah right))

But i'm looking at a CAAD9.

I continually fettle mine, as I get faster/fitter my riding position is changing so most of the mods have revolved around that area, there's only so much you can do to make a heavy hybrid quick though and I'm quickly getting to that point.

Mine are only small modifications: new bell, new saddles (BG spesh ones), couple of inches off the handlebar width, Marathon + tyres that sort of thing.

I keep trying to think how I could modify the bike so that it would be instantly recogniseable as mine from a distance if it was stolen.

My MTB is standard apart from the saddle and the tyres. My Raleigh Twenty has been rebuilt to totally standard spec. My roadbikes are real mix of bits and pieces, even down to having a Peugeot with a Raleigh badged stem (which may upset the purists!).

Ive only changed the tyres on the Kinesis but then again, I've only had it 3 weeks!

The Sirrus is my most changed bike, the pedals quickly went (now clipless) the suspension seatpost went soon after (replaced by a carbon bg one), the wheels and tyres cot changed and then i converted it to drop bar at the same time I added a new saddle. The Frame's a good one though ;)

buy standard, mod later. first thing i do is change the pedals. then tyres, and then strip any unwanted stuff from the handle bars (such as bells)

Then i might change the crank arms if they are too long or short. but mostly not.

My Trek hybrid is completely off the peg, didn't have to change the tyres or saddle on it, which is a first.

On my ss mtb I think only the frame remains from the original purchase, the rims possibly but they were detached from the frame when I resurrected it from my parents garage so I can't say for sure.

Whether it matters depends how much of a snob you are doesn't it?

My best bike was off the peg (oh, except that I asked them to swap the wheels because I'd heard bad things about the standard set) and none the worse for it.

Given time all bikes will gradually mould themselves to their owner and accustomed use.

Best bike - custom frame and I built up. Other road bike - off the peg frame, I built up. MTB - originally off the peg, been re-painted, upgraded etc. Fixed - custom build, off the peg frame (of sorts).

I don't think my hybrid has had anything upgraded, unless you regard the one M+ on it an upgrade (I certainly don't).
