My boss is a prize dickhead but he also happens to be a pretty good boss so while I may not like him, he's good to work for.

My boss is a complete twat but I'm self-employed.

Here for rides.
Regular or frequent event or one off error of judgement?

Speaking as a boss I concede I am, at times, and probably too often, a knob. Just like all my staff.

I'm still paying the psychological price 20 years on for staying too long in a job that was doing my head in, so I'd say ride your bike to unwind, and while you are doing that, plan your exit strategy!

Good advice, I stuck it for only 5 years then my boss died. Very sad.

My next boss was pretty rubbish and left. Then I got a good one for about 3 years before we all got made redundant. I've never looked back worked since.

What do you do when your boss has a go for no good reason and makes you feel like quitting your job?

I can't quit because my family needs the cash so I need to get over it fast.

Any advice welcome.

Snap - that's Mr Summerday's situation - he comes home each day looking miserable and wishing he wasn't in that job but he is the main bread winner in a well paid job. It was OK until his previous boss left to go to Australia ... the new one has usually sent him 10 - 20 emails of work to prioritorise before he gets to work at 8 am. (The one in Australia has said come and work for him - but I'd hate leaving our family behind).

If this is an occasional 'I am in a bad mood so I will take it out on someone', rather than continual sniping, I'd be inclined to bring it up another day with them.

If the latter, bring it up anyway but do start looking for an exit.

You never know, they may not be aware of how abrasive\hurtful they are being - at least one of my old bosses drastically changed for the better after a short discussion.

Glad I work for me, I can be a knob to myself sometimes! Walked out of a good job 30 years ago before marriage and kids. Forgot I had a mortgage till I calmed down but work was easier to come by then. Lots of good sdvice has already been given but just hang in there till you find something better.

I'm going to a do in a couple of weeks where I might just meet the tw@t who made me redundant ten years ago... if he's there, I will no doubt rise above it, but I'll be tempted to have a pop, if only a verbal one... and I know things about him.... bad things... but ... no, it's not worth it!

I employed people for over 20 years and it was hard work, boy does it feel good now with just me on the pay roll.

I've nearly always liked and got on with my managers, even managers my colleagues had a problem with. Saying that I was sacked three times when I was younger. I've seen some people have to eat shoot because they had family responsibilities. The only thing I can suggest is start looking. No chance of a change in department?

Things have got worse rather than better.

I've only been in the job 2 months, and was unemployed for 12 months before that. It's an 18 month contract so the exit plan is already in place; although a little way off yet!

I'll just deal with it for now, bu thanks for all the advice.

get an exit strategy, I don't know if it was the company but I couldn't hack a 9-5 working with the same people and realising no one really did anything, ever, I left it to go full time freelance. My original plan was to work there for 12-24 months while I built up my photographic work, so leaving early made it hard for me but I'm getting there

Don't sink to his level by having a go at him, Fnaar, it won't make you feel any better. Anonymously dropping powdered laxatives into his drink, however, takes it to a whole new level of entertainment...
