When not distracted by man-made objects, what direction does it face when evacuating its body?

Aren't academics weird? The thing that baffles me about dogs' 'evacuations' is the way they crap over here, then scrabble away frantically at the ground, as if in an effort to bury it, as cats do, but in a place about 10 feet away from where they did the deed. What's that about?

Given my hound cranks the stuff out all over the place, can't say I give a ... which direction he's facing, just wish he'd learn how to do DSP (dog sh*t patrol) himself, either that or take a dump in the compost bin and save me the trouble of spotting it round the garden and picking up after him.

It's about covering me with loose soil normally as i bend down to pick up.
