I saw advent calendars being sold earlier this week.
No it isn't, not until September 21st . Autumn starting September 1st is an English thing in order to fit 4 seasons into 12 months. Real autumn is dictated by the position of the earth in relation to the sun, as per the rules of astronomy.

Beebo is correct. Section 12 of the Christmas Act, 4BC, clearly states "Chrismas shall be deemed to have begun when the first mince pie is consumed, without regard to the calendar date."
