Following on from benb's thread about jacking it all in, what would you do if you won the lottery?

Me, I'd do the usual: money for friends/family, buy a house, dream holiday, etc etc etc, but then I think I'd do something useful with the money.

Cycling and walking have really helped me over the last few years and I'd like to set up a charity/organisation that gets adults struggling with depression out into the Big Outdoors with group rides, walks in the hills etc, therapy sessions and how-to sessions on everything from maintaining one's bike to healthy cooking.

You?

Sounds perfect to me, Jo.

One thing that I wouldn't / couldn't do is stop working. I've a friend who won just over £1m a few years ago, she went part time in her job and said that it made the world of difference working because you wanted to rather than because you had to.

+1 for all the usual, but, (and this is not just for your benefit Jo), I have a plan to open a bike shop with a small cafe in it as well that sells cake, what could be better than that? I've got it all mapped out in my head and everyone would navigate towards it on their rides for some casual cycle chat, (see what I did there?), and the best cake for miles

Why do you need to win the lottery to do that Jo, just do it anyway

Cars, bikes, women, and the rest I'd waste.
George Best wasn't it? ^_^

But seriously, I would certainly leave this job because it's shite but I would definitely find myself another, or probably do something voluntary/charity. I couldn't just do nothing.

Lets face it, if you had a few million in the bank, you could afford to be very picky about who you worked for...

Normal stuff - I'd make sure family are all sorted.

Then I'd give up the day job and devote the rest of my life to making sure the tiger never becomes extinct.

I don't do the lottery so my version would be - what would I do when I finally come up with an idea that makes my fortune? (Preferably, a fantastic idea like local inventor Percy Shaw's Cat's Eye.)

Funnily enough, I'd do something very similar to you CJ. It would be great to lift the mortgage millstone from my neck and of course I'd help out those closest to me.

My forum rides help lift my spirits and that is why I do them and encourage people to join me. If I had the money, I'd take them to the next level and organise cycling holidays here in the UK and abroad and I'd subsidise them to make them affordable for all.

I'd also support some of my favourite charities such as Practical Action who teach people in the third world how to help themselves, rather than just giving them food every time there is a famine.

I never understand people who say that if they won a fortune, it wouldn't change their lives. If their lives are so damn perfect already, step aside and let someone who would appreciate the cash get hold of it!
