....... to overtake.

I rode out of my work place and down the drive.

I saw a bloke in a yellow hi viz waterproof on a roadie pull up to the junction opposite. A 2.5 mile ride home would be a left turn for me, but I was in the mood for the 4 mile run, so went to turn right.

Mr hi viz turned the same way, straight into a climb. I stayed behind on my heavy hybrid, churning away on the big ring with relative ease. He was on the granny ring, and kept getting up on the pedals. I thought he was going to accelerate away from the oik on the MTB (me).

At the top of the climb I had gained on him, and pulled alongside to say hello. He couldn't summon up the breath to speak, and pulled over and stopped, so I carried on expecting him to come flying past on the downhill.

He didn't.

I enjoyed my commute last night.

Hills are a great leveller - there is no-where to hide, even if you sit on a wheel. In our club we'd often ride hard up long climbs, trying to shell each other out of the back. It was great if you were on-form....a nightmare if you were not......

Yes, I have to say I can never see the point in these posts. I've never been much of a climber but I don't see that that makes me a legitimate target for any smug racing whippet on a crappy hybrid. So he was knackered at the top of a hill ... maybe he'd already ridden fifty odd miles.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the point is - Having an expensive bike, doesnt stop you being scalped

Sorry if I came across badly there CP but over the last two years my form on the bike has dipped badly where it seems everyone is passing me and there doesn't seem to be a lot I can do about it.So if it had been me instead of your victim then it would have probably been the same result.

Im beginning to wonder if I could handle a hundred miler of which I haven't done in over three years.Im beginning to very much doub't it.Yes i've been a whipper snapper where I used to overtake many people and feel pleased with myself but times change.

Sometimes I don't enjoy my commutes it's hard work and a struggle when it shouldn't be....... and now wonder if im coming close to calling it a day.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the point is - Having an expensive bike, doesnt stop you being scalped

Didn't say that though,he said he was on a heavy hybrid while the mug was on a roadbike.Oooops that could of been me.So cycling is one big ego trip now? Figures .

Also im getting tired now of people at work saying oooh you cycle you must be fit.I don't feel it....

#Exhibit 1#

CP how old are you? Not meant as a sarcy question or anything. Was he young or old?
Sounds like i'd struggle up this hill as well.

Schadenfreude...the pleasure we take in another's discomfort.

I hardly every use the big ring on my bike. I live on the middle ring. And I have no hang-ups about climbing in low gears. As the weeks go on, I find it easier and easier (I have been commuting now for a month) to get up hills.

The first hill I get to in the morning is about 250 yards from my home, and I push the bike up it because I can't see the point of knackering myself before I am warmed up, and it's steep.

But youth should glory in its strength, and middle aged farts like me should just be happy that we can still walk upright......

I've just fixed my gearchanger on the front as it wasn't fitted.Expected it to be fitted when I took bike in for sevice but they didn't bother........

Yesterday I went to the gym in the morning, and did 60 mins on a wattbike, covering 33km. Went to lunch for 45 mins, came back and did another 33km.

Now it was time to cycle home, up Whitelady's road (you Brizzol people will be aware of the steepness of said road) I matched a guy, who was about my age, for pace up the hill. He was on a drop bar Giant road bike, I was on my heavy hybrid.

Needless to say I was chuffed (and slept like a log last night!)

I'd have been proud if you had beaten him and he was about my age.

im starting to find this thread depressing now.

Well I'm 18, he was probably 18-20 himself... Probably a bit fitter than your average 45 year old  I think that I did pretty well
