Going back for a moment to the OP...
I think the level of animosity and venom is about right. The first time I became a member, I was hurled about like a leaf in a storm. I was accused of not being a cyclist and all sorts of other crimes - in part because I said I found close passes a small issue. I was a troll, a moton and several other things I didn't really understand. I flounced (unannounced) but came back a while later as Boris Bajic with the same blinkered and narrow views, but more armour.
Since my return I've attracted some fairly venal comments, but it's the Internet and it doesn't really mean anything.
I've also made some fairly waspish asides that will have been unpleasant for the recipient to read.
Overall, the tone seems about right to me. We all know there are some brain-free trolls on the Internet... But none of us is ever really sure whether we are one of them.
I find a cutesy little cabal of J-P S wannabes in the Current Affairs bit every bit as clever, absurd and apple-pie as they already know they are. It's the Internet and it doesn't really mean anything. I 'like' quite a lot of their stuff, but dislike rather more. I don't know them, so it's all a bit of fun. At least I hope it is.
Then there are occasional visitors to Commuting who seem to have been born without the irony gene. That's OK. It's the Internet and all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds.
Just as the throttle works both ways on a motorcycle, so a keyboard and mouse give you many options. If it ever gets too horrid for me here, I'll flounce.
And come back with a different avatar and name to say what a jolly good chap my previous incarnation was and ask why I left....
