Its a symbol of the glib commercialism that's long since pervaded Christmas. Hell, Santa dressed in green until the Coca Cola company for their hands on him in the 20s and 30s. The people moaning about the gridlock are almost all mindless consumers themselves, a part of the very problem they're decrying.

It's not entirely untrue. Depends which story one selectively picks from Google.

It's certainly the case that Santa had been pictured in many colours, including red with white trim, but following Coca Cola popularising him in those colours you'll be hard pressed to find him pictured in anything other than red and white since the thirties.

If you chaps know of any large-scale widespread use of Santa in other colours post Coca-Cola then feel free to show us.
