I love classical music but hate opera singers. I have to trade off falling asleep to something soothing and serene with being woken up in the dark of night by some Diva pushing her voice somewhere where god never intended it to go. My hatred of opera is so deep that I end up listening to the eternal gabbling talky-talkiness of the BBC World Service at night.

I'm with you there. I actually used to like opera until two opera singers moved in downstairs. Holy cow. The wailing racket they make practising is truly terrible (I'm not remotely averse to classical music, being an ex flute-player and sometime classical guitarist), but would almost be forgivable if they weren't so up themselves. I've honestly wondered what bad actions I could have done in a past life to have them as neighbours.

I'd hate to have Radio Moron inflicted on me for any more than about four seconds. In fact, any longer than it takes me to find the "Off" switch is too long. The great thing about being a lorry driver is that I can listen to exactly what I want, all the time. Sometimes I have classical music on the ipod through an FM transmitter (there's quite a good stereo in the truck), sometimes I have the Pixies or AC/DC or Okkervil River or any number of other artists, sometimes I just listen to Radio 4 all night. And no one ever complains.:becool:

Downfader, treat yourself to an ipod and then you can listen to whatever radio station or music that you choose. My ipod has a wide and varied selection of music on it, everything from Samuel Barber through to the Sex Pistols. Actually I'm going through a bit of a colliery brass band thing at the moment, but keep that to yourself.

I object to the pap they usually play in work places. I stopped going to one barber as they played a local chat radio all of the time. Listening to the rubbish they trotted out on air and the moron in the studios was bad for my blood pressure.
As I suffer from tinnitus it also makes communication next to impossible.

Simples...Remove the radio from the work place. You need a Performing Rights Society to play a radio in a place that is not a home or private car. Workplaces, hotels, taxis, buses all need PRS licences to play music. So unless they let you listen to classical report them to the PRS!

Where I work, there are 3 of us in the dept. When I get there in th morning, Planet Rock is on - very loud too & it really is too much first thing in the morning.

The other guy insists on listening to R1 for a couple of hours & either I'm getting old or the music is utter shite nowadays.

I insist on R2 for the Jeremy Vine show but it's immediately changed to Planet Rock as soon as I leave the dept.

So all in, 9 hours, I get 1 hour of what I want & the other 2 set to share the remaining 8 hours.

Any type of music would be great, id listen and not complain. In our office too many ppl get hold of the remote and switch to tv, from my desk at the far end of the office I cannot see the screen very well, so I just have to listen, great when on radio mode. The guys near to tv are a mix bunch, 1 is an F1 fanatic, 1 is a wimbledon and cricket fanatic, so when these are on tv all I get my end is the noise of a strangled cat... believe its the F1 cars on the track and the oooo's and aaaaa's of wimbledon, the sound of leather on willow!..... Id love to listen to classical , jazz, folk, rock or anything else the music industry can throw at me just drop the strangled cat :-(

We have radios in the labs and factories, it would drive me mad and some of the older lab staff aren't too happy about the choice of station and the distraction from their precision jobs.

I HATE Classic FM, those irritating commercials and the smug girly character of the station, like it's aimed at middle class women curled up on the sofa with a mug of hot chocolate. Yeuch! If I ever hear Vivaldi's Four Seasons again I will scream and scream until I'm sick.

You can watch the tv whilst you're working, are you a public servant?

Just be grateful they don't put Loose Women on!

Actually I'm going through a bit of a colliery brass band thing at the moment, but keep that to yourself.

Don't apologise.

Your next step is to get yourself to a top flight brass band gig.

I saw the Black Dyke Band at St Georges Hall in Bradford earlier this year - they were awesome.

A top flight brass band live performance has the be experienced by all.

Got the licence when the company took us over. One of the few good things they did.

20 odd years ago I worked in shops and bars for a few Christmases. As a result I now still can't hear to 'Phil Spectre's Christmas Gift For You' or any of the standard christmas songs without feeling a rising tension which builds into a misanthropic rage. Slade makes it happen twice as fast  .

I have been known to leave pubs and go home wqhen meeting friends because christmas music is on. Shopping between November and January also becomes less fun than it is anyway!

At work I usually work single cover, so prefer Radio 4 so I don't feel as lonely  .

Whit Friday is good round here. Only been to a couple so far but have really enjoyed them. The choice of pub to stand near helps a lot I think.
