Night Train

Maker of Things
I was invited, by my ex wife many years ago, to see her friend in the Friendly brass band playing a gig. I was really enjoying it but she made me fake a migraine so we could leave early as she couldn't stand it.

I HATE Classic FM,

Mrs G puts Classic FM on all the time and it's not for me at all either. It's all that 'Beryl's on the M3 and she'd like to hear some Handel' or ''Roger's on the M6 and he'd love a bit of Chopin'' crap. And the ads...oh the ads... How can flogging car windscreens possibly sit comfortably with Mozart? I swear I can sometimes hear the sound of composers spinning in their graves. Something about the station is just all wrong. I'm not into classical music at all, but I would have thought R3 would be a better station for them what like it. Classic FM also have a weekly chart show - yes a weekly chart show?! How many new singles have Shostakovich or Elgar had out recently?

As a self confessed philistine in all things classical music, I have however found that you can sing the words of '3 blind mice' comfortably to just about every track- I do it whenever Mrs G puts Classic FM on just to get my own back.

We don't get to listen to music at work, and I must admit I very rarely listen to music radio nowadays. Maybe its my age, but if I want music I'll stick my MP3 player on. It will either play a musical style I'm in the mood for, but a variety of different artists, or I can pick my own tracks, or I can let it be truly random.

Much better than hearing Man I feel like a woman! for the umpteenth time.

I object to the pap they usually play in work places. I stopped going to one barber as they played a local chat radio all of the time. Listening to the rubbish they trotted out on air and the moron in the studios was bad for my blood pressure.

Get yourself one of these....
Mini FM TX
Plug it into your iPod or MP3 and blast your own choice of music over the top. You just need to know the frequency of the offending station. I've ahem..tweaked my FM tx a bit so it gets out almost a mile.
A while back on holiday in Guernsey, the bar in our hotel was always tuned to the local s**te FM. We soon got really fed up with it, so I used my transmitter to play some music over the top on the same frequency- worked a treat. The barman couldn't work out how Guernsey's Island FM (they must have pondered for months coming up with that name for the station) was suddenly getting away with playing stuff like Tenacious D's ''F**k her gently'' and 'Fire Water Burn' by the Bloodhound Gang- happy days!

From listening to classical music at work.

I like it. I dont see what their problem was, but 4 people threatened to make an "official complaint" about it to the Boss. Charming. Its not as if I play it loud, or play offensive music. I'm even out of the way of everyone else in a potwash area.

My colleague who came down to break the news to me said she's been told to retune the radio station to something "more local." She puts on Wave106 (I think its called) and theres that Rihanna chick singing "ride it, ride it, ride it COWBOY!!"

Err yeah..? How is that NOT offensive?

Isnt' Wave106 the radio station from GTA Vice City?

Downfader, treat yourself to an ipod and then you can listen to whatever radio station or music that you choose. My ipod has a wide and varied selection of music on it, everything from Samuel Barber through to the Sex Pistols. Actually I'm going through a bit of a colliery brass band thing at the moment, but keep that to yourself.

keep this under your hat......... http://www.brassfestival.co.uk/ ..........ask no questions

Being a cabbie most of the week I get to inflict all sorts of music on deserving souls. Some customers have the cheek to ask me whether they can have Heart on or some other monstrosity, and I usually tell them they can if they can find that said station. Most don't bother after that.

I tend to flick a lot between R4 and R3 and occasionally Classic FM. Have to agree with Glow Worm about the advertisements but it is much more accessible to those who enjoy classical music than R3, but for me I prefer R3. You forget there's anyone there at times whereas with Classic FM you get that stupid '....and now, time for more music on Class...' and on goes R3. I like the requests and the idea of the charts because even for a massive fan of classical music, there's sometimes odd pieces that I haven't heard and others that I'd happily listen to again and again. They also play shorter pieces which is what the radio is about. I mean most pop tunes that make it high in the charts have a radio edit version that's even shorter than the original, which is generally shorter than a very short thing.

I recently bought some Ravel and Debussy (La Mer by the LSO with Simon Rattle) and will be ordering a very nice piece, amongst others by a chap named Vincent D'Indy. Einojuhani Rautavaara has been a very recent discovery, a contemporary composer, very old man now, and this morning me and my two-week-old son were listening to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Tomorrow night the punters can have Mozart for their troubles, and if the party really gets going then some Sibelius.

Downfader, I honestly think classical music bores people because there's so much more to it, and isn't an instant hit like some 2-bob piece by Rihanna. There's nothing for people to grab on to because they're so used to monotony and the need for instant gratification. Most classical music takes a while to seep in and a quiet, enchanting, atmospheric little section or movement is often so because it stands in contrast to other parts of the piece.

20 odd years ago I worked in shops and bars for a few Christmases. As a result I now still can't hear to 'Phil Spectre's Christmas Gift For You' or any of the standard christmas songs without feeling a rising tension which builds into a misanthropic rage. Slade makes it happen twice as fast  .

I have been known to leave pubs and go home wqhen meeting friends because christmas music is on. Shopping between November and January also becomes less fun than it is anyway!

At work I usually work single cover, so prefer Radio 4 so I don't feel as lonely  .

I know what you mean. Hell for me is being in a supermarket while self-gratifying In A Winter Wonderland is being played on the PA.

A good antidote is to hum a version of a Christmas Carol which used to be (still is?) widely enjoyed in army circles:

When the red, red robin
Goes bob, bob, bobbin' along
Shoot the bastard, shoot the bastard, shoot, shoot, shoot!*

*I quite like robins but not in Christmas songs.

i occasionally freelance at a small agency that has radio 1 on all day. neither i, nor the proprietor or his wife like it, but it was assumed that the young girl who works for them and their twenty-something son who works there occasionally were the ones who liked it. i've asked both of them, and neither of them does.

nobody's changed the channel though…
