Yes following on from my dangerous dogs thread the other week, i've been attacked by two dangerous dogs as i was cycling on a road next to a scrap yard. It's not a road that i'd normally choose but i've been out in this horrible head wind for a couple of hours so i didn't fancy the steepish normal route home so i chose the longer, flatter route that passes a scrapyard. I saw two dogs in the road, i wondered if they were chained up then as i got close to my horror i realised that they weren't! One of them, a Doberman type ran at me howling which aroused the Japanese Akita object(i know, bloody horrible things aren't they!)which then joined in. I got off my bike, as someone suggested to do in the previous thread, and stood still. I didn't make eye contact at all but they weren't calming down. I walked slowly away but the Akita ran ahead of me as if to block my path, it was i don't mind admitting a worrying experience. I thought they were going to attack so i put my bike between them and me and had to walk backwards while they stalked me. I made it to the main road where they must have thought "their territory" ended as they then walked back to the scrapyard. I hurried home to phone for the police, then i saw the bite mark. It's a small nip type where the dog has slightly penetrated the skin above my left ankle. I've reported the incident to the police, the receptionist said that they'll come and see me in the morning. So there you have it, it seems the scumball scrapyard owner who is well known to the police, thinks that the area round his yard is his to do as he likes, including letting dangerous dogs roam freely to attack people.
I'm not letting the incident be passed off as something trivial as i truly believe that if i hadn't dismounted and acted calmly then i'd be in the hospital now having stitches or "reconstructive surgery" even!!

Obligatory "I'm married to a vet" post - My Mrs says you should goto the doctor asap even if it is only a nip. Dog bites can get very infected very quickly and you should get antibiotics within 24 hours.

hope they put down the dogs before they really hurt someone and ban the owner from keeping animals.

I was doing a charity ride last month and there was a stray Staffordshire bull terrier in the middle of the road,luckily i rode past it and nothing happened but my heart was in my mouth.

I would check if you've had a tetanus injection in the last ten years.

On a lighter note, a couple of years ago I was coming up to some gypsy caravans parked along a country lane with what from a distance looked like a medium sized White dog (poss a staffy) standing alongside the road, a little obscured by a bike. I had second thoughts about whether to carry on but as the alternative was to double back and take a sizeable detour I carried on nervously. It was only when I was a few yards away I could tell it was a White plastic ornamental donkey flower pot, I felt mightily relieved but also a little embarrassed!

Second "I'm married to a vet nurse" reply. get animal control to sieze the dogs and have them put down! Give the other dogs and owners a bad name!

You should go to your doc asap to get checked and jabbed. No telling where these dogs mouths have been certainly on their b****ks for sure or other dogs a-holes. If you start sniffing around trees and panting when it gets hot you are in trouble.

You have reported this guy to plod which is good. Now ring up HMRC and Customs and Excise about his cash deals for scrap and lack of records ................ could also mention to plod that he takes lead, copper and brass, anything from anyone, even if it is nicked. It might also be worth contacting the local authority and also HSE. A lot of calling but he only needs one to take a real interest then they will all be on him making his life a misery.

It would have been wicked to have had this as head cam footage. Maybe you should try and get some mace just in case the dogs don't get put down and the scrap yard scumbag lets them roam loose again?

You'll be pleased to know its actually safer to be bitten by a dog than it is a human, as they have 'cleaner' mouths. Sounds daft, but true. We have many more harmful bacteria in our mouths than dogs. Still worth going to the hospital to check your tetanus is up to date, and get the injury recorded though.

A dog dangerously out of control in a public place causing injury is an absolute offence. There is no defence to it at all, so he can't later claim 'but look, they are fine' or any excuse at all. If you were bitten the offence is complete.

I will see the nurse at my local health centre in the morning about having a tetanus jab. I would've gone to the hospital last night but i'd have probably been waiting for hours to see someone, and i gambled on getting a jab within 24 hours of the bite, so i should be ok. After i'd calmed down i thought to myself why didn't i just turn around and peddle like billyo back down where i'd come from, but these creatures were stalking me and i reckon they'd have sensed my retreat and run after me, maybe taking a swipe at my leg or backside!
I mentioned the incident to someone down my local last night. He said that he'd heard of others having run ins with this scrapyard owner about his dogs, and he said that he's "a nasty piece of work who'd think nothing of punching anyone who complained about him". Anyway,I'll see what the police have to say in the morning.

FWIW.... sometimes it works to bend down and pretend to pick up a stone - some dogs will run away when they see the gesture of you arming yourself with something that's about to hurt.
