They appear to be search engines, what they do I'll have to say I don't know. Other than collecting data.

Sorry. Why do they search for info and what do they do with it.

All search engines have programs that index sites on the internet and then store the information in databases so that when you do a search for anything they can find the most relevant site for the search terms you have used, they also look at what other sites are linking to that site to decide what site is the most relevant for what you are looking for.
