So, when I ride a couple of miles to work/shop/pub I am at the same risk as someone riding hundreds of miles a day on a race across america, who at the time of his crash was tired, and riding on a main freeway?

I slipped on black ice last week while cycling. I wasn't wearing a helmet and I had to go to the Small Injuries Unit at our local hospital the next day.

I was in a great deal of pain. I am still in pain at times, entirely because of the crash.

Surely that says it all.

Oh, and how's the bike?

Annoyingly, the bike was fine.

The steering twisted, as quill-stem systems do. And it untwisted with a wrench whle the wheel was between my knees, as they do.

It is scratched more than its 25-year-old enamel already was. If I can work out the new scratches from the old ones, i'll have soomething to be cross about.

Just because it was fine after the fall, I removed both wheels and re-packed the bearings. They were fine before I started the job. they're even finer now.
