Any change to rules about cyclists being overtaken would mean changes to law and thus I assume changed to Highway Code. The article prompting this thread and Vine's proposal is from Aug 2023. Highway Code was last updated 2022(?) and Highway Code updates are infrequent (given the work involved, getting changes out to road users, etc.).

It is updated rather more frequently than you seem to think
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/updates

Although surprisingly, there have been none in 2024, there was one in 2023, four in 2022, three in 2021, etc.

So calling for such a change the year after a Highways Code update is just daft. Time to have called for such a change would have been during the consultation before the Highway Code update.

Well iut was actually much less than a year, but as I say above, they are frequent enough that doesn't matter.

If Vine really wanted a change he'd have called for it earlier and cynic in me suspects his real motivation is "click bait" and PR. I would not be surprised if me was not an avid Social Media poster seeking "Followers" and to get/keep followers you need content ...

Of course it is click bait. He knows perfectly well there is no chance of it happening.

I took my test in 1972. When it came to the emergency stop, the examiner said 'When I slap my hand onto my clipboard, stop'.
I kept his hand in my peripheral vision and as soon as I saw it move down, I hit the brakes.
I passed - !

You got got to admit, MGIFs are not right in the head

I was on the bike once, doing pretty much the (20mph) speed limit and leaving a sensible gap to the car in front. The driver behind, who been driving up my arse anyway, felt the need to overtake and squeeze into the gap in front. It wasn't per se a dangerous manoeuvre but it was utterly pointless. To emphasise the ridiculousness, the bike I was riding was my 1050cc Triumph superbike

Can't blame him for giving up the cycling blogs given the death threats and stuff

sounds like him bike being stolen was the last straw

feel sorry for him in spite of not being able to stand any show he is on!
He does seem to be an honest and good person

I regard Vine's cycling videos as doing more damage to cycling/cyclists than help. I generally don't watch them and don't follow them/him but the few I have seen, watching them I thought he's contrived the situation and often it came about through his own poor cycling (probably to create the incident to give him online content).

That said I also consider it wrong for online abuse but sadly it seems to be acceptable behaviour these days Government and platform providers seeming unmotivated to sort out the negative aspects of Social Media.

I have to agree about his videos - the few I have watched I end up thinking that this is not helping in spite of him not technically doing anything illegal

does seem like a genuine person - but his public persona is just not for me
