HI Guys,

I am thinking about planning a trip from JOG to Le

I have set myself an ambitious Target of 6 days to complete the ride, I want it to be a real challenge....In 2009 I cycled from reading to Alp D'Huez in 8 Days and it was difficult but extremely rewarding!

Does anyone have any advice for an ambitious target, Is 6 Days to ambitious or not ambitious enough?

Thanks

Brad

It depends on how fit you are and how hard you want to push yourself: only you can know the answer to that!

It's challenging for me but not for the folk who do it in five days.

For a real challenge aim to do it Audax style in 4 days and 20 hours to qualify for one of their awards or aim to do it at half the pace of the world record i.e you take 88 hours instead of 44.

44 hours? Now that really is a challenge

I did it unsupported in 4 and 1/2 days with a good 8 hours sleep each night.

That is by no means a super-human feat - you just need to train properly until you get to the stage where a hilly 300km ride in 15 hours is comfortable enough that you can repeat it the following day.

What's the furthest you've cycled in a single day?

I have cycled 120 miles in a day, with Alp d'Huez at the end of the Day.

Have you any suggestions on your route? Did you take the shortest route e.g on all the A roads?

Also which way did you go, LEJOG/JOGLE?

I would like to do 5 days and just stop at B and B's on the way...any other tips?

I've also done it Audax style: 4days 13hrs & 45mins. We used travelodges, you can have a read about it on my mates blog http://www.datameist...s.blogspot.com/ you'll have to go one page back for the start, if you don't like hills don't follow our route

Edit: If Ameferanga managed 8hrs sleep a night then he is definitely super human.

Not really. Typically I'd set off at about 5am and be at my destination for the day by 5-6pm. About 280-300 km/day so an average speed including stops of ~24 km/h. I kept stops to a minimum, just grabbing sandwiches and drinks from shops/service stations and carried a healthy supply of muesli bars each day. Since it wasn't about sight seeing and the weather was crap (4 days rain out of 5) I tried to get the day's cycling done as quickly as possible so I had time to eat, get supplies for the next day and relax a bit before bed by about 9pm.

Day 2 Pt 1
Day 2 Pt 2
Day 3
Day 4 Pt 1

Day 5 Pt 2

I tried to avoid the worst of the A-roads such as the A30 and A9. I did avoid the A30 completely, but ended up using a lot of A9 until just after Inverness as it wasn't too bad. It was busy at times, but early morning and late afternoon it was lovely and quiet and way, way better than the up/down/up/down cycle path that shadows it.

Its difficult to recommend a route really as so much depends on when you'll be on a given road. For example I took the A38 into Bristol, but at 5-6am it wasn't too bad. I doubt I'd have taken that route if I thought I'd be there at 8am.

One bit not to be missed though is from Alness up through Bonar Bridge/Lairg to Bettyhill. Well worth the slight detour and if you do take the A9 up to Inverness you can at least look forward to some lovely quiet roads and fantastic scenery once you get over the Moray Firth.
